They have to be family because the entire crew of the ship immediately agreed to follow Michael Burnham into a time wormhole 800 years into the future because she was gonna be all alone and sad when she got to the future without them.

Universal assent to this plan. Everyone on the ship was like "Yeah, gently caress my life and family and career plans, let's go 800 years into the future right now".

To be fair that attitude is the most Star Trek thing about the show. If it was a one off episode like Children of Time from Deep Space Nine.

TuxedoOrca

I think about this idea I taked to with a friend of how it would've been better if early in S1, the Discovery got sucked into an anomaly and dumped in the far future and the whole show was about them dealing with being stuck and unable to return. A kind of Voyager, but without the goal being a several decade journey away.

In that situation a lot would work better: the crew being stressed, the whole found family thing they want, burnham being out of her depth, the galaxy being completly alien to the crew.

They have life and family 800 years in the future. Hell maybe they could just remake your old family by then. If you're offered the chance to go into the future, you take it. Besides, if you and your family being alive and coexisting is that important to you, obviously do not sign up for Starfleet, basically the deadliest job their society allows.

The problem is the Starfleet captains all steer right towards the anomalies.

Vulcan ships have completely uneventful travels because they just avoid all the dangerous anomalies.
