According to an article I found, they've got a purifying plant for groundwater cleanup, and the air from the hall itself is continuously being extracted and filtered through an active carbon filter. Mostly the article focused on an armoured excavator they had constructed for the task.

Bit of a personal OSHA but when my parents had the garden redone in the 90s they used old railroad ties as liners for the flowerbeds.

Yeah if I recall right it's this gigantic vacuum chamber where they pull the lumbers moisture out, leave it under vacuum and pump the preservatives in, then release the vacuum and all the chemicals get turbo sucked into the wood to replace all the removed moisture

You made me remember that my family used coal ash instead of sand or something to get traction when the driveway (more like a trail) iced over.

Dethlinger Teich: More finds than expected - Meyer visits

The Dethlinger pond near Munster is being cleared since October. Significantly more explosive ordnance has already been found than expected. Environment Minister Christian Meyer (Greens) is visiting the company that is disposing of the finds today.

Meyer is accompanied by the district administrator of the district of Heidekreis, Jens Grote ( independent). The two will also sign a further financing agreement during the visit. For such large projects, the money is only ever paid out in stages, explained the Ministry of the Environment.

According to the district, the fifth agreement, which is being signed today, will secure the work until the planned completion in 2027. 72 million euros have been earmarked for the Dethlinger Teich, according to the ministry. 18.3 million euros of this will be provided by the state, with the remainder coming from the federal government.

In the first one and a half metres - that is the first layer - significantly more has already been found than had been expected, according to the Heidekreis. By the end of February, 20,000 detonator charges, 300 grenades and ammunition scrap had been found. Chemical weapons were not yet among them, but are also suspected in the pond. Despite the finds, the project is on schedule and on budget, according to the Heidekreis. Over the next five years, seven more such layers are to be removed by the specialists in Munster.

Some context, former Nazi Ammunition plant that had the British Army dump lot of of the ammunition and poo poo in the pond after they captured it in 1945.

Stuff like :

"Lower Saxony state government in 2014 in response to a small query" posted:

Contents of the pit
There is great uncertainty about the actual quantities of ammunition dumped. Any written documents or counting lists do not exist. The information comes from contemporary witnesses, was estimated and is therefore inaccurate. Since 2,500 grenades had already been recovered by September 2023, the amount of 3,000 grenades originally estimated by contemporary witnesses has now been corrected to 30,000.

“The large number of possible substances and their chemical behavior, including with one another, do not currently allow a serious description of the pond contents.”

To be appreciated:

approx. 100,000 pieces. Type C-98 priming charges
approx. 30,000 pieces. Combat grenades , caliber 7.5 cm to 32 cm
approx. 150 pieces. Combat ammunition 7.5 cm to 15 cm
approx. 200 - 300 phosgene bombs with filling, defused (approx. 100 kg per piece)
approx. 300 barrels, each containing 250 l of liquid phosgene
approx. 100 barrels, each with around 100 liters of lost liquor

This was pretty common. The creosote in the wood kept it from rotting or getting eaten by insects.
