It seems almost inconceivable that they would suspend or ban Ohtani, as that would be so incomprehensibly detrimental to the game's present and future, and so that's probably exactly what Manfred will do.

That all blew up in Rose's face because he refused to pay the scumbag a big pile of hush money, Ohtani probably will not make the same mistake and his former interpreter will probably testify it was all his own betting

Popete posted:Sports gambling addiction is going to be the Opioid Epidemic of the 2020s and anyone with an ounce of foresight could see it coming. Yeah there have been lots of articles for years out of the UK where laws around betting have been loose for a while about people losing a ton, struggling to stay away, then getting microtargetted ads tailored to their betting habits & being lured back to ruin themselves more. There was a new WSJ podcast ep about someone losing $400k mostly through Draftkings. Didn’t fit stereotype as she’s a psychologist in her 40s. This is made worse by how the betting companies are run by not great people who are gonna have an infinite lobbying budget to steamroll whatever remaining protections there are in the next few years.

Yeah honestly even if Ohtani himself can 100% substantiate that he didn't do any gambling, he could still be in trouble for paying millions out of his own pocket to illegal bookies even if it was to cover somebody else's debts. I think if the actual facts turn out to be "Ohtani's friend got in deep, Ohtani bailed him out as a favor, the end no moral" then he'd get off with a relatively light punishment (Ippei probably not so much) since what he did was bad but mostly just because he was an idiot rube trying to help a friend. The pivot to the theft angle after the initial story does make it seem like Ohtani maybe paid before consulting with his lawyers and then they freaked out he'd done it and are trying to spin the story to protect their client. Or Ippei really did steal it and Ohtani initially tried to cover for it but is now walking it back, who knows. Crazy stuff, if there were two players who I really did not expect to ever be wrapped up in scandal like this it'd be like, Ohtani and Trout.

Unless they have betting slips with Ohtanis fingerprints on them and cancelled checks like Jordan to bookies, he'll skate. The interpreter is toast as far as ever setting foot in an MLB clubhouse ever again, but MLB isn't going to suspend or ban the biggest star in a generation.
