here is my boring prediction for what happened and will come of this:

Ippei's first story to ESPN is the closest to the truth (Ohtani's PR people letting Ippei talk to the press without a lawyer is still a baffling own-goal, he should fire those people immediately if he hasn't already). Ippei ran up a debt with this bookie, came to Ohtani for help, Ohtani agreed to help him but didn't trust him not to just gamble away the money immediately so he insisted on paying the bookie directly, not realizing this is a crime.

Federal prosecutors mostly don't care about the bettors in this context, they're much more interested in the people running the illegal bookmaking ring. Ippei will cooperate with their investigation and suffer some mild legal consequences that pale in comparison to killing his cushy career as Ohtani's bff. Ohtani will at some point be deposed by the feds and at worst pay a fine, the league will not pursue the matter any further, accepting the results of the federal investigation as they have every incentive to repair Ohtani's image asap.

But these investigations move slowly, so this will continue to be a distracting story and twitter meme all season, perhaps longer. Once it's done a subset of people will still believe Ohtani was betting on baseball and the feds/MLB covered it up, another group will enjoy making bad-faith posts about the same because it's funny. A "special" group will forever cite this in defense of Pete Rose.

Particularly because he's on the Dodgers and everyone hates them now, this will never truly die. If he manages to win a title in LA a fun new narrative will be that MLB fixed the WS since they're in bed with gamblers. But who cares, even without this scandal there would never be a WS the Dodgers win with Ohtani that everyone will agree is "legitimate" since the haters will always find something to complain about.

Do we actually know what Ippei was betting on? If it was Angels games while Shohei was there then yeah, that's real bad. But if it was harmless, albeit degenerate sicko bets like NHL preseason games, then he doesn't need the book thrown at him, he needs professional help.

He claims it was never baseball, mostly soccer and basketball. If his first story, that he racked up $4.5M in gambling debts in a 2 year span is true, then he clearly needs professional help.

If he were betting on Angels games using insider info, one would expect he wouldn't have run up such a big debt.

ESPN story says it was primarily foreign soccer games. He never bet on baseball supposedly as he was aware that was illegal. His original statement to ESPN before it was rescinded he claims he did not know what he was doing was illegal and he knew enough to not bet on MLB.

Far be it from me to defend the Astros but can you let a single post by an Astroposter even when it has nothing to do with Trash Cans go by without bringing it up?

Like, Dodgers have a legitimate claim to have lost a WS to the Astros cheating and they don't even bring it up as much as aggrieved Yankees fans who lost in the ALCS.

I would honestly bring it up more but people just tell me "haters gonna hate" or "stop whining" or "the Dodgers were cheating too" or "the league singled out the Astros" or any number of other tedious dumb bullshit so I don't bother anymore. There's no point, even if the Dodgers had won that one people would find some way to discount it.

Before this betting scandal came out I had already accepted that any potential championships the Dodgers win in the next several years will be discounted by a bunch of people as unfairly "bought" or whatever.

I would in general prefer to be able to earnestly engage in baseball discussion here at least, as the one place on the internet that isn't completely poisoned.

It's crazy to me how long guys can hang on so long as they had the tiniest modicum of MLB success. This guy hasn't pitched an MLB inning in close to three years and hasn't had even a partially successful season since 2018, but because six years ago he threw 23 decent innings he can still get chances.

to be absolutely clear, I am sick of the responses I get from Astros posters about it who bring up bullshit excuses, which results in a retread of the same poo poo, which other people get annoyed by

legitimately we get more jokes about the Dodgers' "fake" 2020 ring than we do about the Astros 2017
