Inspirational story for young children as always! "Go do your daddy's hobbies with him sometimes instead of only doing your own stuff that he doesn't care about! If you don't, one day he might just die and then be a ghost for all eternity because you never went on a walk with him!"

So like, I don't think every story has to Say Something. It doesn't have to necessarily make some kind of great statement about stuff. You can just tell a story that's entertaining, endearing, that processes a mood. It can just convey an Emotion or a Feeling or a Vibe. But this, so far, this is just. This is just nothing. The punchline really is just going to be "Haha his unfinished business, as introduced in the page before this, was no one went for walks with him. He got to go for a walk and complain about his family which he hated, and finally he's experienced relief!" And that's it. What even like... VIBE do you take from this? What am I supposed to GET out of having read this?

Nothing, because Mookie only ever writes for himself, and he just wanted to complain about how his family doesn't go for walks with him or something I guess?

Mookie please you'd be better off just doing terribly drawn porn like the vgcats guy does now instead of just trying to make your vent journals into comics.

Yeah that's what I'm figuring - this is our introduction to the spirit shepherd and she's going to have some other adventure rather then helping this guy out.

It had better be the intro. Cause if it ain't, then... Well, I was about to go into a screed about how Mookie doesn't know the first thing about making a story, but we've had evidence a-plenty of that before.

Like his big regret while dying alone in that cave was that he never reached out to anyone, never made any friends never stayed in contact with his family and so on.

So just having someone he could simply walk and talk with was enough to get him to move on.

Yeah seriously. A lonely man who pined for companionship in life finally getting a chance in death. Instead we hear about Pancake McGee hating his family and walking to get away from them.

This is exactly what happens when you don't plan your stories and wait to 'be surprised' by characters with the depth of a paddling pool.

Mookie started this with no idea what the ghost's unfinished business was, and in the end realised the only characterisation that he could base it on was 'goes on walks to escape family'.

That third panel of the first comic just makes it. It's still funny if you remove it, but that panel included just makes it top tier.
Why doesn't Mookie just come up with a name for each character he creates?
He keeps saying that he "Likes to be surprised" yet never bothers to explore each page as it's being created. Mookie knows no more about these two assholes than we do. Isn't he even just a little bit curious about who these people are? He created a whole backstory for ghostdude, an entire family, a history, but he never bothered to give him a name.

What the gently caress?

I'll go ahead and say I don't really hate this; a guy who pased away and left a wife and child behind, and those were important to him, but his innermost, selfish, most personal regret was just being unable to share a day's hike with someone. I think that's fine.

That's what is so maddening - the concept is fine and it could definitely work but that requires moving beyond the rough first draft which is all Mookie's workflow allows him to do. It's insanely hard to get a story like this to work by just chucking out your first thoughts with a "that'll do".

She's a woman and he's a Mookie, that's how they work.

Joke aside, if any character can get away with comforting people and telling them what a good person they are, it's someone who's job it is to calm down restless spirits and help them move on. It would obviously be better if Shepherd were more like Suze from the Mediator series whos prefered mediation method is breaking a ghost's nose, but not all ghost shepherding stories can be as good as that series aimed at teen girls.

The nameless bog witch was an orc, I'm pretty sure. And she definitely had magic, even if most of it involved pond scum and vomit.

That other lake-dwelling entity who pukes magic beer, though, that was the best character.

Yeah I think 'he just had to finish his last walk' is a fine payoff for a vignette, but there was no story, mood... Anything. It barely even feels like it happened.

The impression I've been getting is basically that since Dominick burned out his powers beating the big bad, the whole point of making magic more democratic or whatever was so that he could access it again. Like his students rewrote the rules of nature (with his guidance, so he can get the credit for it) to make sure he didn't have to lose anything in the long run. I don't think we've seen Dominick use magic other than the dream stuff yet in Legacy, and I'm not sure that counts, but that's the feeling I get.

I wouldn't have minded his walk being his unfinished business if the story ended with him coming to terms with his death and passing through his own volition rather than it just being some kind of switch that turned off. This way he portrays it there should be millions of ghosts who died in the middle of doing something.

TBF we don't know that Snut's adventure happened 200 years after original DD either, we only know that the book he was reading was written 200 years after. That book could be 10, 20, 100, or 10,000 years old for all we know. But I doubt that this thought has ever corssed Mookie's mind so it happened exactly 200 years and the book was written yesterday I guess.
