lol that family statement is loving awesome:quote:“How you live is how you should die. Mojo Nixon was full-tilt, wide-open rock hard, root hog, corner on two wheels + on fire…Passing after a blazing show, a raging night, closing the bar, taking no prisoners + a good breakfast with bandmates and friends. A cardiac event on the Outlaw Country Cruise is about right… & that’s just how he did it. Mojo has left the building.”

It’s been a bad week for alt-country, y’all. On the plus side, the annual Sirius XM Outlaw Country cruise that killed Mojo is an awesome experience, and we should all go next year, when they’ll probably have a tribute show for him.

exquisite tea posted:Fucccccccckkk I really wanted them to make it, ya know. Hopefully it was an amicable thing. My wife and I had some thoughts about it when we saw him in Toronto. Amanda wasn't with him nor was she on the tour that summer. That documentary was pretty telling. I know context is everything and things can edited to tell a story but that was pretty intense. When she has her blow up in studio you can see the faces on the rest of the 400 Unit like it's not uncommon. To be fair there are also documented tales of him having a row in studio for her records when she told him how to play on a song. Interesting that he is the one that filed.

I checked out Amanda’s latest record when I heard the news, and I feel like this wouldn’t have been a surprise if I’d listened to it earlier. It’s not the happiest bunch of songs.

I listened to her record when it came out and was none the wiser, I just tend to assume most country-folk songwriters are speaking in character. Never heard of the documentary though, sounds pretty wild!

Found this album a few weeks back and have been binging it non-stop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7o88vrGh7Y Reminds me of something between early Bon Iver, with the overdubbed vocals, and Grouper, with the dreamy, lush ambience. Total peach And apparently Phil Elverum's a fan: quote:I’m really really into this album called soon by Hana Stretton who is playing the show in Melbourne on Oct. 7th. I don’t know what the deal is, who she is, where the ideas came from, how it came to be, or anything. I love it. It feels like it comes into my world on a night wind and has belonged there since forever, unexpected. Whatever ingredients went into making this record, I hope Hana can keep access to them for a long time. Allyn fucked around with this message at 00:04 on Feb 28, 2024 |

Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real was an amazing live show, probably the best one I've seen at the theater in downtown Monterey, CA since I moved to the area. The other two were Mike Campbell and Wolfgang Van Halen, so that's saying something! My favorite song of the night was Forget About Georgia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FUQfoZjeJk but this one was the opening song of the set, I feel like it's one of their signature songs at this point, and it hits like a truck live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIU4EkghoEc Lukas also did Bowie's Life on Mars solo on the piano halfway through the set, which came out of nowhere and got people singing along. His voice obviously sounds a lot like his dad, but the band's overall live sound is a bit more honky-tonk than I expected, definitely in a good way. My grandma probably would've recognized a lot of what she liked about Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, as well as Willie, and that's how I judge country music... if grandma would've liked it, it's worth listening to. The opening act was Madeline Hawthorne, who is very, very proud to be from Bozeman, Montana! Unfortunately I'm struggling to find any of her songs she played last night on YouTube, but she was dynamite with just a 3-piece band (one other guitarist and a bassist) and promised that she was trying to book future California dates with her full band, which is closer to a rock ensemble. Definitely worth a look. https://www.youtube.com/@MadelineHawthorne https://www.madelinehawthorne.com One thing I really appreciated was that Lukas brought the entire opening act back out a couple of different times throughout his set to sing harmony. It was a great way to recapture old-time gospel harmony influences and showed a lot of respect for her and her band. She alluded to the fact that trying to break into a country career going through Nashville channels had been a poo poo experience for her, so seeing a legacy artist who's already built a solid name for himself like Lukas lift someone else up that way really increased my respect for him in turn. I definitely want to attend POTR's next tour too.

Just bought my ticket for Suwannee Spring Reunion at the gorgeous Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. My wife didn't even give me a hard time or try to talk me out of it! Tried to wrangle some friends to come but we're all olds with kids so looks like I'm flying solo. Got some disappointment when the schedule released since I can't get up there until Friday morning and can't stick around all day Sunday. Gonna miss Keller Williams Pettygrass as well as The Grass is Dead.

Yup, he's got two sets Saturday I'll catch, and another Sunday afternoon I'll miss. Railroad Earth is playing both Friday and Saturday nights, and I'm very much looking forward to Sam Bush. It's going to be a great weekend of camping and music

Checking in from Suwannee Spring Reunion. Sam Bush killed it last night. Verlon Thompson and Shawn Camp did a great set of Guy Clark songs yesterday. Fireside Collective is a lot of fun. Railroad Earth last night and again tonight. Verlon Thompson and Jim Lauderdale did a set this morning where they spent as much time bullshitting and telling stories as they did playing. Peter Rowan in a couple hours and then again this evening. It's a beautiful thing

Not super jammy but they played late and I bailed a bit early so maybe they opened it up at the end. They're earlier tonight so I'll catch the whole set today.
