studio mujahideen posted:generations arent real I dislike the term because it's usually shorthand for trends in American populations that don't necessarily work in an international context but it's fine if you're clarifying what you mean by the word rather than just shorthand for "young whippersnapper with blue hair and 18 genders"

studio mujahideen posted:what about every other generation that grew up with tv. if the answer is 'theyre also hosed up' then you're getting close to understanding There was a time when people weren't consuming isolating entertainment a majority of their day, it's literally within living memory. The supposition at the time was that "Television becoming ubiquitous would have deleterious effects on society, particularly those for whom who did not experience society prior to such" and I think one could make a strong argument that it ended up being mostly correct. The argument Liz made is that the same argument could be applied to the internet and I'd argue that's likely true as well. Television as the ubiquitous entertainment medium is only going to apply to people born from 1945 to about 2000 or so. I'm not saying the cohort who grow up after this won't be hosed up, but they certainly won't be hosed up in this particular way which is the entire point of the first argument. I can't really see how someone could argue against it at this point. You seem to be saying that yeah things are always hosed up which is just vacuously true. It's a completely meaningless assertion.

the noise level is unending now, and more varied than ever, TV is a quaint thing to panic about when contrasted with infinite algorithmic distractions at your fingertips 24/7 that noise has always existed, and people have never been perfectly wired to grasp reality, but this modern noise level should be concerning for how potent it is at atomizing everyone, as a purposeful tool and even by accident that noise is also seeding the majority of people who would live largely apolitical lives with a thought terminating minefield across their understanding of conditions around them, making attempts to drag them toward material reality (or even just their own immediate self interest) more complex than ever everyone a step more political are trivially propagandized into causes that struggle to intersect, much less build into a greater movement, because there's an endless amount of noise to disagree on and we all live with the noise, it's our cope and a comfort blanket in response to everyone else embracing the noise in ways that alienate people from each other on a day to day basis, most of us wouldn't know what to do without it at this point you can choose to go touch grass on an individualistic level, but what's gained if no one else is willing or able to join you

dying at the Chapo reading of the white nationalist moving to the midwest and becoming convinced that midwestern white people are some sort of lesser, asiatic-hobbit subrace of whites and that perhaps white nationalism is not so great after all turn the midwest into a massive open air reeducation camp imo

hm yeah I initially read it as a step down from white nationalism to mere white supremacist, but I guess he was more realistically moving the other direction where you’ve accomplished the white nation and it’s time to start theorizing which subraces of the whites need to be culled

the rural midwest used to be cool. it was full of unions and socialists and nice people. now it's a place where you can still buy a house for the price of a honda accord, but everyone is broke and getting broker and, in my experience, hates anyone for trying to improve things. i grew up poor in rural iowa, but there were your normal "rich" kids with parents who ran manufacturing places. now my hometown is so poor they don't even bother to do cursory income checks to see if your family qualifies for free lunch - every kid just eats for free now. dollar general and family dollar are probably the biggest employers outside the local school and hospital systems. when my parents die, i don't know what ill do with their house. sell it for $40 grand and split the money four ways, i guess? if i can get that much down the road? the population has only shrunk since 1950, and no one is having kids, so who needs a big victorian house?
