I really thought it would happen in the fall but we got that last minute save and a second buzzer beater last night. I don't really feel like the behavior of Congress is consistent or predictable anymore though.

Nah this was always the most likely outcome. The GOP are a group of shitbags but government jobs and, even more importantly, the workers on contracts for various government jobs are everywhere so everyone gets yelled at when a shut down happens. While a “soft” shutdown over a weekend was possible, anything extending into the work week was unlikely.

Maybe they finally caught on that the polling has determined that a shutdown is bad for republicans and maybe they shouldn't do that.

I mean, maybe they should just do their jobs and pass it in a timely manner, but I suppose the stick is the only way to make them do some actual work.

In September / October, Donnie is going to demand a shutdown for any random reason he comes up with, so it's not so much about the stink, it's the object permanence. To date, I'm not really aware of the shutdown instigator actually "winning" anything. Even Donnie forced a shutdown over nonsense (this the big mac summit) and got nothing out of it.

My only suggestion for hummus is cook your own garbanzo beans, every canned kind I’ve tried sucks dick.

It adds some time, but just go beat off or whatever for a few minutes while they boil, then throw them in a colander to cool and watch some Netflix or something. (or beat off again)

Nope. The NY appellate court just issued an order granting trump a stay if he posts $175m bond within 10 days and properly perfects his appeal (gets record to the appellate court on time and files his initial brief by July 6).

What happens if the NY AG goes after assets that Trump put up for the sexual assault/libel bond? Does the bond company have a senior lien on those accounts, and would that force them to act on that lien and take the assets?

The NYAG wouldn't be able to get anything from those encumbered assets, so they won't. The prior judgment would attach first, so they'd get nothing.

Basically, when it comes to court judgments, the payouts go in order that they're attached to an asset. Those judgments can be superior to some creditors, but won't be to a mortgage on a piece of property.

They're also not seizing anything yet, as Trump has 10 days to post a $175m bond.

Any idea what the court’s reasoning behind the $175m bond amount?

It’s 40% of the initial judgement and seems out of line with how these things are typically handled.

They didn't post the reasoning, but it's basically due process / irreparable harm imbalance in the parties.

https://bsky.app/profile/gregdoucette.bsky.social/post/3kojsbtirln2w

So there's no real irreparable harm on the government if the government can't collect on that money... because they're the government. There's real irreparable harm if Donnie's poo poo got seized, sold off, then he wins on appeal. As this kind of judgment is basically unheard of to begin with (because Donnie was particularly idiotic in the scummy books), the appellate court took the out. Donnie's a special boy.

It'll be funny if he can't post that $175m bond though, or he complains even more about it.

Weird how that due process / irreparable harm balance seems to swing the other way when someone is locked up for a bag of weed, or loosies, or driving while Black, or anything not in the "rich people only" bucket of crimes. Guess losing your job or home or kids or whatever isn't irreparable like a rich guy having some points knocked off his Money High Score and getting the sads from it.

If Donnie catches criminal convictions, they wouldn't be delayed due to Special Boy status though. Granted, this upcoming porn star payment trial in NY might not even yield jailtime based on how similar convictions are sentenced.

Everyone convicted in civil or criminal actions are entitled by law to exhaust all of their appeals. That's part of the rule of law thing - not exclusive to anything that's going on.

The problem is that only rich fucks always get to take advantage of said appeals, with the ability to pay lawyers, and said lawyers know the ways to stall a civil judgment (like this case). A lot of this is quite standard for civil, white-collar judgments since that's a really obvious place where the two-tiered justice system (rich vs. poor) goes to work. Civil poo poo takes years and years to exhaust all the appeals and bullshit.

A lot of this is because up until now, we're dealing with pre-trial motions and civil poo poo. Even rich fucks, when convicted criminally, don't get to stay out of jail/prison after they're sentenced to time.

Note that I'm not intending to defend anything - it's all bullshit.

ASAPI posted:

If you had money, did white-collar civil crimes, and had a big business, you could! Donnie ain't doing poo poo special - this case has been cooking since 2020. Donnie's not doing anything fancy - just maximum delays, maximum appeals, and paying lawyers to do them.

The "rule of law" has different rules based on the laws broken, and there's the rub: rich-people crimes and poor-people crimes. It would be funny if we all did that poo poo for traffic tickets.
