Just started reading "Spartacus and the Slave Wars" by Brent D. Shaw of the University of Pennsylvania, which was published in 2001.

Only twenty-four pages in, he has given some interesting history on the use of Spartacus by people on the left. Apparently Marx was given a questionnaire by his daughter and one of the questions was who was his hero, he said "Spartacus & Kepler." No idea who Kepler is and I haven't read anything by Marx but thought someone might find it of interest.

ooh, I know this! Kepler was a space guy. He discovered asteroids or something.

Off-topic: blatant racism aside, ever wonder why the hell one of the world's most wanted, publicised & notorious terrorists apparently was part of a senior South Korean government entourage, who was also close proximity to the US President, without a basic Korean or US background check noticing something? Even with a Secret Service traitor helping Kang in the movie, multiple agencies in multiple countries should have picked something up, right?

Well, in the original script, Kang's family defected from North Korea when he was an infant, but died in the process thanks to ROK landmines in the DMZ. He was raised as an orphan in South Korea, where he served in the Special Forces, and then in the Diplomat Protection Corps for many years protecting Korean government officials. He's been vetted numerous times and hasn't done anything to arouse suspicion beforehand. Hence a) why he'd passed several background checks by multiple countries and b) he used his military contacts to help bring in people loyal to his plan. Kang believes in revenge for his family, that all foreign countries should stay out of Korean affairs, but he's not really a fan of unification or of the North Korean leadership. It's still a dumb popcorn flick, but at least this better explains why he wasn't picked up by initial security checks.

Apparently, this was far too subtle/confusing for American audiences, so this part was scrapped. Granted, the script does have a fair bit of extra stuff with the NSA trying to cover up their screw-ups via assassination, a bigger part for the President's kid, a monorail chase at the end etc, so some cuts were necessary, but Kang's background? Just replace the intel guy's "America never bothered to do a basic check on anyone who will be literal feet away from the US President in government treaties. More importantly, neither did South Korea do their own check, they just let randoms like widely photographed notorious terrorists act as security for their senior officials on overseas visits, lol, what idiots!" dialogue with the slightly better original backstory.

Aviation nerd story time, and how the US Navy Super Hornet is deliberately crappier than its original design, thanks to corporate greed & the US Navy not knowing how to check operating costs properly.

The Boeing Super Hornet (MacDonnell Douglas made the original Hornet & had already done first flights of the Super Hornet, when Boeing merged with them in 1997) has wing pylons deliberately canted outwards to the air flow of the plane, at about 4 degrees. This means there's greater drag, reduced range & a greater radar cross section than its original design. This also means that it needs more aerial refuelling than it was supposed to: aerial refuelling very quite expensive, especially for carrier capable aerial refuelling aircraft. Why? In very late testing, it was found that certain stores on the pylons, when released at certain speeds & altitudes, could fly back up & hit the aircraft as the stores simply weren't being ejected hard enough. The 3 options for Boeing were a) use stronger ejectors in the PAVE Bomb Rack b) make the pylons cant outwards to eject stores further outwards at the cost of extra drag, range, RCS penalties etc or c) redesign the wing to use spoilers for the pylons. They chose b)

Why not use stronger Bomb Rack ejectors? They wouldn't have had to redesign the wing with spoilers, or force their manufacturers to make mold changes to their machinery tools to use canted pylons. Not to mention stronger ejectors would have made it more suitable for future heavier/oddly shaped stores. Well, Boeing/MDD decided it was cheaper for them to make the pylons cant outwards...except that cost analysis was made on the incorrect basis that only a tiny number of ejectors would ever be bought. It legitimately would have been cheaper manufacturing wise to use stronger ejectors, since once you make more than a few, it's actually cheaper than changing your wing/pylon tooling method. After all, the US Navy were planning on buying hundreds of Super Hornets to replace multiple types of aircraft anyway, so larger orders of both the aircraft & ejector systems were guaranteed. Not to mention, this cost figure was only for Boeing/MDD manufacturing of the Super Hornet: it did NOT include the US Navy operations cost of having to use extra fuel, tankers etc to compensate. The US Navy was too incompetent/corrupt to bother doing their own costing, asking the simple questions of "What are the extra costs of having to refuel more, use more aerial tankers etc if the aircraft is way draggier? Also, what are the operational impacts of it being more visible on radar & slower than we planned?"

quote:

However, warnings that the F-18E flowfield might have adverse consequences were dismissed by management as CFD predictions and not proven prior to wind tunnel testing. After extensive weapons separation wind tunnel testing in the AEDC 16T transonic wind tunnel, with data analysis in the form of trajectories and miss distance calculations, it was determined that the aircraft configuration had a major store separation problem, Figure 14, with the red area indicating the store would hit the aircraft or adjacent store A trajectory improvement study was undertaken to improve the release and jettison operational envelopes. Several modifications were investigated, including pylon toe, pylon doors (spoilers deploying from the pylons during store release), change in release sequence and PACER bomb rack. The final solution chosen was a change in pylon toe and release sequence. The change in pylon toe, Figure 15, had the effect of reducing the aircraft induced yawing moment at carriage, since for stable stores there would be a corresponding increase in the freestream restoring moment. It also increased the total drag.

I've been watching some Cold War era American and British videos about the Soviet military. They all show a deep respect for their capabilities.

But, talking to people, it's a very common refrain these days that Soviets would have been easy to defeat. When I mention that this wasn't the view at the time, most people respond with either "the US always exaggerates the threats it faces to get more money" or "the weapons manufacturers always exaggerate the threat to get more money".*

Somehow, though, none of those people seem to think that the MIC has any influence on anything. Certainly not on wars or policy or the state of the military. ???

Bringing it back to WW3, this is also the reaction to US military papers about how they will lose WW3, as well as the reaction to the US navy talking about how much bigger and more modern the Chinese navy is. All, apparently, just... bullshit. Foreign militaries are a paper tiger, their weapons and equipment useless and often outright fake. The US is invincible, and likes to pretend it isn't. :psyduck:

It's such a weird contrast to Cold War videos that I find it fascinating.

*Funny bit about that. The quite good Cold War Conversations podcast at one point had a BAOR officer. He talked about how prior to the 80s, British troops were explicitly told they were only a tripwire: their purpose was to die and thus trigger a British nuclear retaliation. Now, obviously, that isn't great for morale. But he then goes on to say that after German generals talked to them and rewrote their doctrine, they realized that they can definitely win, and Yom Kippur convinced him totally that they would would be able to win easily when outnumbered 14:1. At that point, he decided Soviet capabilities were simply marketing by Western weapons companies.
