Memory derail is cool and interesting! I also can't really visualize things and struggle to remember faces, but I do have one special ability to compensate: I remember sounds extremely well.

You may read that and think it means I recall what people say, but no, nothing so useful (and I haven't figured out why it doesn't work for that). What I do recall is stuff like sound effects, melodies and, weirdly, what someone's voice sounds like. I can't remember what my friends tell me, but I can bring up their voice in my mind saying anything.

As for sound effect recall, it mostly makes me very annoying to watch movies with. We all recognize the Wilhelm Scream, but I'll also recognize and point out stock sound effects like "that one creaky door" or "the same series of bullet ricochet sounds as in that one X-Files episode" or "footsteps on hard surface".

I do have an internal monologue, and I can't really imagine thinking about stuff without it. I also have a non-stop, uncontrollable jukebox in my head - there is always music playing in my head, and the only way to control it is to put music on IRL. But because I don't actually have perfect music recall, it usually just becomes a loop of ten or so seconds from a song, playing for anything between a few minutes to several hours. Right now my brain is going "Breaking the law, breaking the law [guitar riffs]" over and over, it's great.

WHY, JUDY?! WHY?!
🤰🐰🆚🥪🦊
I learned that I can't imagine images and when other people say they picture something they mean way more than I do pretty early, but it wasn't until the "good news everyone, you are now reading this in my voice!" Meme that I realized other people can imagine voices and read things in accents. I can think in words, but I don't hear them and I certainly can't read something how someone else would say it, neither aloud or in my head.

On the bright side the 'you are now breathing manually' thing doesn't affect me either, maybe related, probably not.

Years ago video game magazine EGM had Henry hill do this for a bunch of mob games. They also had him play animal crossing. His kid was annoyed he liked animal crossing and wanted to bring it home. Hill just responded “shut the gently caress up, you got to have a childhood, I didn’t”

I have basically zero ability to visualize things, if I shut my eyes and try to 'see' something, I just get blackness.
This has had no effect on my ability to draw, I took art classes a few years ago and I got got fairly good pretty quickly.
The way it feels to me, is that the visual information is definitely stored away in my memory, but I'm somehow not allowed to directly look at it, like it's in a library - I can request an item, the librarian gives it to me, but NO PEEPING. I just know about it somehow, without actually looking.
It's very weird and hard to describe.

One of my first jobs was working in this cement plant with a total bunch of stooges. The foreman was this very divorced guy who would go around the block to this park with the lead carpenter and another guy who was a full blown alcoholic at lunch every day and smoke weed. He had gotten one too many DUIs and I didn't have a car so I'd be walking and often met him riding his bike with a tray and a 24 of beer on it. I dont recall him trying to drink one while also juggling a smoke though.

One question, at the risk of prolonging this already tired derail. If you motherfuckers cant visualize anything in your head...how the hell do you masturbate?
