I don't think anyone here understands how stock values work The market cap of a company is (# of shares) * (the last traded price of a share). Bid/Ask volume is a huge consideration. Example, say you are a shrewd investor and you own 1,000,000 shares of TRUMP. You decide to start selling shares. You spend all week marketing it, and you finally find someone willing to buy a single TRUMP for $10. Does that mean your pile of TRUMPs is worth $10,000,000? More importantly, could you reasonably tell a bank that you have an asset that is worth $10mm and use that to secure a loan? Its market cap is $10,000,000!!!!!!! Now let's say you need $1,000,000. You only need to sell 10% of your TRUMPs, right? Easy! And it's worth $10mm! So you try to sell them for $10 each-- the ask price. No buyers. You do have the last sold price though, so the ticker price is at $10 still meaning on paper you own $10,000,000 worth of TRUMPs. You really need that money though, so you try to sell them $9 each. No buyers. Seriously you need that money now the sheriff is at your door. So you try to sell them at $5 each. You find one buyer. You now have $15 cash, 999,998 TRUMPs and a pile of shares that dropped in value by 50%-- your pile of shares is now worth $5,000,000. You still need money so you sell them again, and you find a buyer at $1. You now have $16 cash, 999,997 shares of TRUMP and a pile of shares that dropped in value by 90%-- the entire pile is ostensibly worth only $1,000,000. You can say they're worth $1,000,000 when you have people who are buying at that price but if nobody is buying at that price, then it's not worth $1,000,000 even if the last price someone bought it at is $1. Trump is not going to get $3bn from truth social. He's probably going to get some amount of money though, but if it's $16 or if it's $3bn depends on a lot of things (namely, which foreign investors wants to buy the republican candidate for president). SPACs are weird but just treat it as an IPO: they're going to go out with a price, and see if they can get people to buy it for that price. There might be some enthusiasm in the market but the financial status of truth social just doesn't justify investment based on any fundamental understanding of the value of things, so in whatever way the value of a stock is based on its ability to make money it's a total dud. But markets are made up of people -- idiots -- and it's extremely unlikely it'll go anywhere but south just because the reason people buy stocks -- to get money back in some way -- just isn't there. Again, unless you want to buy a republican presidential candidate. However, many people buy and sell stock intending to only find a person dumber than them to buy it and I imagine the republican grift machine is going to be out in full force on this one and holy gently caress republicans are stupid.
