The lead-up is still in the rewind of this port live stream. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83a7h3kkgPg 01:26:37 EDT ship has a blackout while in a turn. That's 128 seconds before impact. 96 seconds before impact at least some power is restored.

Annotated recording of the 4m40s before impact, showing the ship losing power, regaining it, losing it again, and so on. Wind was apparently blowing from right to left (on the recording). https://youtu.be/65uEshwEhO4?si=PXlAFmc--RP0i5na

Don't bridges usually have big concrete sleeves around their supports to prevent exactly this sort of thing? Though, looking through google just now for that image, it seems a lot of bridges don't.

Somethingsomething unsecured load mumble mubmle Regarding the ship: So it had power problems, guess it lost steering and the wind pushed it off course?

Megillah Gorilla posted:Don't bridges usually have big concrete sleeves around their supports to prevent exactly this sort of thing? That little bit of concrete wouldn't have done poo poo to stop an empty container vessel let alone a loaded one. Those things are loving big. You need a lot of energy to stop that type of momentum.

Best bet would've been a good captain with a good fully loaded cargo ship that could've rammed the bad ship before it crashed into the bridge

When discussing the forces involved in large ships, adjectives like "titantic" are fully appropriate. Even at only 4 knots there's enough energy to gently caress things up beyond repair. I wonder if there's footage around of a ship at full cruise speed (~20kn) hitting a pier.
