Let's see if it turns out to be true and the future consequence.

There aren't that many men between the ages of 18-25 to begin with. As long as the mobilization is "voluntary" (as in the state doesn't legally enforce it), I'm not sure how many will respond to the summons for mobilization.

Well the question becomes the nature of "basic military training" and if it mandatory; there was talk of making it so and therefore that person would then theoretically be possible to draft. There has been confusion this entire war because there are a bunch of different levels of mobilization including anything from a semi-voluntary draft of recent reservists (basically the inactive reserve) to chasing gardeners down the street.

Didn't Ukraine use to have a massive industrial base, wonder what happened to that.

During the 2000s/early 2010s there was a surge of billionaires' valuation in Ukraine -- something particularly noticeable with the investment going on in football there. Shakhtar Donetsk's owner is (was?) a steel baron, made so from the mob seizing coal refineries and other activities after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Even though it took a loving while for things to stabilize in order to have business, the European Union quickly realized that Ukraine still had some of the largest steel complexes around and other very large scale industrial facilities ready to go -- coal, iron and steel made the guy above the richest person in Ukraine. Like any cycle, however, once the demand boom went out, being now a private interest, did exactly what expected and downsized with the appropriate dismantling.

I like this story because it shows that they still had memory of industrial wealth in very recent history, but the mob and neoliberal banditry are pretty similar things in the end of it lol

Don't think any of this is going to become "the question". Even suppose you could draft all the kids, what are you gonna do with them? You could get barely trained 19 year olds to hold a trench if there is a trench, but what's the point if you're just sitting there and catching shells? Like, even the NATO heads are talking about the big turn-around in early 26, when superior market economies will finally innovate their way into producing shells.

Ukraine ramps up spending on homemade weapons to help repel Russia

quote:

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine needs any edge it can get to repel Russia from its territory. One emerging bright spot is its small but fast-growing defense industry, which the government is flooding with money in hopes that a surge of homemade weapons and ammunition can help turn the tide.

The effort ramped up sharply over the past year as the U.S. and Europe strained to deliver weapons and other aid to Ukraine, which is up against a much bigger Russian military backed by a thriving domestic defense industry.

The Ukrainian government budgeted nearly $1.4 billion in 2024 to buy and develop weapons at home — 20 times more than before Russia’s full-scale invasion.

And in another major shift, a huge portion of weapons are now being bought from privately owned factories. They are sprouting up across the country and rapidly taking over an industry that had been dominated by state-owned companies.

[....]

Yet like many aspects of Ukraine’s war apparatus, its defense sector has been constrained by a lack of money and manpower – and, according to executives and generals, too much government red tape. A more robust private sector could help root out inefficiencies and enable factories to churn out weapons and ammunition even faster.

[....]

Kuzmin, the owner of the mortar factory, fled the southern city of Melitopol in 2022 after Russia invaded and seized his factory that mostly made spare parts for farm equipment. He had begun developing a prototype for mortar shells shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, when it illegally annexed the Crimean Peninsula.

Kuzmin took over a sprawling warehouse in western Ukraine last winter. His long-term goals include boosting production to 100,000 shells per month and developing engines and explosives for drones.

He is just one of many entrepreneurs transforming Ukraine’s weapons industry, which was dominated by state-owned enterprises after the break-up of the Soviet Union. Today, about 80 percent of the defense industry is in private hands — a mirror image of where things stood a year ago and a stark contrast with Russia’s state-controlled defense industry.

Each newly made projectile is wrapped in craft paper and carefully packed into wooden crates to be shipped to Romania or Bulgaria, where are loaded with explosives. Several weeks later, they’re shipped back and sent to the front.

[....]

As impressive as Ukraine’s defense sector transformation has been, the country stands no chance of defeating Russia without massive support from the West, said Trevor Taylor, a research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based think tank....

kinda weird that the defense sector in what was one of the most industrialized areas of the ussr is described as "small but fast-growing"

DJJIB-DJDCT
Feb 1, 2024

It is a good comparison, because when the Hapsburg Empire broke up, the industrial nodes in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland etc. were all hosed overnight because they had all relied on flows of goods and workers, as well as the markets, of the different regions of the empire. So, when the USSR collapsed, yeah it turns out that SSRs were not designed to be self contained nations.

Oops.

and then for those same ingrates who betrayed Mother Austria, and then later, the spirit of socialism, to beg and plead for admittance into a transnational economic bloc... it sickens you.
