Snow Cone Capone posted:TYS rules, they used to play shows in my basement like 15 years ago They were a local band when I first got into my college's radio station (I hosted a prog show at the time). Me being a total novice at setting up appearances / interviews went from initially asking for a simple phone interview. They accepted, but I got too power hungry with it and threw the idea around of them coming into the studio in person and performing live. Few days later got an email saying one of the members' cat needed to be rushed to the vet so they couldn't come in. Band ghosted me after that lol Nightmare Cinema fucked around with this message at 19:07 on Mar 26, 2024 |

What thread does Sleepytime Gorilla Museum chat even belong in? Anyway I saw them in Philly at Underground Arts and it was one of the best live performances I've ever been to. Just as good as when I saw Herbie Hancock in NJ or King Crimson with the three drummer setup lol. I was going absolutely apeshit. My legs were such rubber from dancing that when I went up to Nils after the show I must have looked goofy as gently caress hobbling towards him. He was glad to take a picture with me even so. Nice people, incredible musicians with crazy stage presence. It was worth the 10+ year wait for the group to reform.

BigFactory posted:I saw them last night in Boston. The opening act boycotted the venue so SGM played for a little over 2 hours. Basically ran through all the songs they had rehearsed and played El Evil for the first time maybe without much rehearsal. Incredible show. Hell yea man. We had about a 2 hour set as well with an encore because everyone was going nuts at the end. Carla's vocal technique is insane, especially live she's such a good rear end singer. Did they have her son come up and do a solo for your show too? They had the dude come up during ours on the tiny rear end little stage and he shredded out a mean one. I was actually impressed, he couldn't have been older than his very early teens and he sounded better than bands with grown rear end adults lol. It was v wholesome.

So every now and then I run into a song I consider important, like that hidden rank above a favorite song. Devin Townsend's "Bastard" is one of those cuz it impacted my musical tastes drastically. A while back a few dives down Youtube's recommendation hole introduced me to Maiak, and while they don't always land one of their songs I'd absolutely consider an important one for me. I've been absolutely obsessed with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. It's my favorite Genesis album and its not even close. Are there other bands I should check out for that mid-70's Genesis kind of vibe? I like how there is a slickness and touch of Jazz fusion in those albums. Folky/classical inspired stuff doesn't turn me off but I'm just way more into the sounds on TLLDoB, Trick of The Tale and Duke. I listen to Camel too and I guess they have some stuff like that in the late 70's. I'm decently well versed in old school prog so I don't need any recommendations for Yes stuff. Basically if Brufford played in a band you can assume I have listened to their entire discography.

Gong's Camembert Electrique is an album I feel shares some DNA with that era of Genesis. Namely the often-unpredictable song structures (while still being songs) + hyper-britishness. Some of Flying Teapot as well, though I'm not as into their jammier side which this trilogy of albums has lots of. "Radio Gnome Invisible" is a good litmus track for them I think. You might also try Brian Eno's Here Come the Warm Jets or Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy which also have silliness and adventurous composition. I think those two records are massively overlooked by Genesis fans. Phil even contributes drums. (Also Eno did a few sound treatments on Lamb.) Not really Lamb-esque but: Eno's Another Green World has one foot in ambient music but the track St. Elmo's Fire features killer guitar by Robert Fripp and if you're a prog nerd you owe it to yourself to listen to it. Probably my fave Fripp solo anywhere. Gaspy Conana fucked around with this message at 22:18 on Apr 8, 2024 |

here's a fun question for this thread: what would you say is the most epic, powerful vocal ever to deliver the absolute dumbest concept in prog music? like, the pinnacle of both axes: an absolutely astonishing performance of an incredibly loving stupid concept for my money: genesis's dodo/lurker has a climax that i'd say is my favorite phil collins vocal of all time, in service of... delivering a riddle that might be about a submarine, but according to the band is probably about nothing.

Figured you've all probably seen this, but I don't think it got posted here: https://beat-tour.com/ Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, Tony Levin and Danny Carey are performing the 80s King Crimson albums Discipline, Beat, and Three Of A Perfect Pair. They've got Fripp's blessing, even. The tour starts in September. Absolute powerhouse of a lineup, I'm really tempted to buy tickets.
