which reminds me that they're currently building a tunnel in the seabed from Germany to Denmark, yes, on the seabed.

It uses pre made blocks that get sunk down and connected together with the pressure forcing a seal. I said to the engineer friend of mine "but aren't they piling it? How do they stop it moving on the sea floor?" Yeah each section weighs like 75,000 tonnes or something lol, that shits going nowhere

e: lol Denmark not Norway

all cargo ships should be hovercraft, so in the event of a collision, the pillowy bumper would bounce off the bridge while blasting all personnel and cargo harmlessly overboard

imo it doesn’t make sense for a number of products tho because they’re worse quality as a result. salad greens, tomatoes, etc.

I am reminded of all those "ugly fruit" companies that sell you slightly bruised fruit at a small discount with the story that it'll just be thrown out otherwise because it doesn't sell.

Pro tip: damaged produce does not get thrown out. It just gets made into jam and soup and stuff. Ugly fruit lets companies sell it at a greater profit by playing on consumers' sense of guilt.

i think its also playing on the consumers identification with the ugly fruit, because most people are ugly and want to still be valuable.

that's only true if they're buying it from farmers or processors. most supermarkets would rather landfill any produce that's not pantone-perfect color and write it off, rather than discount, process, or donate it themselves.

yeah supermarkets don’t really sell that back to a random startup tho, those places do get it from distributors and largely don’t actually save poo poo from anything

because asking people to please maybe stop using so much gas to heat up greenhouses to grow fruits and veg that is uneconomic to grow outside is too difficult

so the right wing luxury car party for racists (not its formal name) instead had a survey done about how high we can raise the dikes and apparently we're good for another 8m of sea level rise!
