StashAugustine posted:Spartans were like slightly better at fighting, though largely because of their reputation and secondly because they actually had military drill (since they had nothing better to do) but they did lose a fair amount and mostly beat the Athenians because the Athenians managed to gently caress up and piss off their allies even more than the Spartans did Spartans were badass warrior communalists in the proto-classical era when they made precious metals illegal and all major transactions had to be done in bulk iron but by the time of the Peloponnesian war they have already adopted the gold and silver standard used by the rest of the Greeks so their weird traditions became more of a hinderence than a help. They ended up as a weird Colonial Williamsburg-esque tourist trap for rich Romans to go gawk at on vacation. I'd imagine that when they adapted the normal money economy their slavery probably went from bad to worse.

I was trying to watch this show called "68 Whiskey", which is a sort of comedy-drama about American soldiers occupying Afghanistan that came out in 2020, centered specifically on a small group of combat medics. It struck me as a sort of modern-day take on M*A*S*H* - one guy gets way too attached to a goat and has to protect the goat from a violently psychotic Australian special forces soldier (accurate!), another is trying to rig an illegal fight to serve as a front for dealing hash, and two of them are getting married just so the Latina character doesn't get deported. I made it about two episodes before it cuts to this scene where a group of ANA soldiers walk up to the base, completely stark naked - they claim the Taliban ambushed them and took all their clothes and weapons. The newbie private that's been the butt of jokes gets handed some surgical gloves and is order to cavity search all of them to make sure they don't have any bombs inside of them and it's all played off as a laugh. I thought it was disgusting and turned it off.

Dr. Jerrold Coe posted:lucifer's hammer started out as niven and pournelle's alien invasion story but they pulled back from comets as a weapon to just natural disaster and revisited the idea with footfall. it's orange county fascism where the end of the world proves that flabby suburban white dudes are the master race even if they get all the "hard" science wrong in their own stories. there was a little genre boom of meteor/space rock disaster stories in the late 70s and the hermes fall by baxter is far superior to lucifer's hammer. shiva descending by benford sucks pretty bad, being bland sf and way too long. most of SF from the time has pretty embarrassing geopolitics lucifers hammer is an amusingly racist book. i took some screenshots of the funniest lines when i read it

a big thing for niven/pournelle is that "equal rights" are bougie decadence that wont matter when the real poo poo hits the fan, whether it's 70s california or space in the year 3000, which again is hilarious because they're soft suburban dorks who never worked a day in their lives and wouldn't last 5 minutes without access to an a&p

loquacius posted:yeah it's probably based on Spartan worship a la 300 (sorry Blood Boils) That was more down to Athens being completely, comically dysfunctional rather than anything to do with Sparta. Athens was doing poo poo like sending entire forces to die on foreign adventures because they took the guy saying they'd need a billion troops as serious advice rather than a warning. Pretty much pissing off every ally they had by being massive jerks. Firing one of their best generals twice, on two separate occasions. Executing a whole bunch of their admirals because they couldn't save drowning dudes due to a storm, and then basically leaving their entire fleet on the beach, unattended (this is the thing that actually lost them the war). They also had a hugeass plague. On the flip side it took Sparta around 20 years to deal with the problem of Athens having walls and sitting behind them whenever they got close.
