My experience like ten years ago was that if you go to the UK and venture outside the Designated Tourist Areas, trying to (eg) order food with an American accent was kind of like making a very loud fart noise in terms of the reaction it tended to elicit

the waitress would be like "alright" (standard UK greeting) and I'd be like "hi!" and she'd stare blankly and I'd be like "um. I'd like a sausage roll please?" and she'd nod and leave silently

Conversely in the Netherlands people spoke English easily and casually and it sounded better than when the British did it

Often times when a British person identifies another person as a "oval office" the British person will call the "oval office" a "oval office". When a British person does not call a person they have identified as a "oval office" a "oval office" that British person is being polite.
