The Oath Breaker's about to hit warphead nine Kaptain!

MechanicalTomPetty posted:

Something I've noticed that made dealing with bots a lot easier is that they are loving slooooooooow. I ran a mission earlier today with the autocannon as my support weapon, and anytime I ran into a big group of them I could fairly easily run some distance away, take cover behind something and have enough time to perform a full reload from zero-ammo before any of them caught up with me - assuming they didn't just give up first. Granted, this is more helpful in the open and not in scenarios where you have to sit on a point and wait while they swarm in to you (like on extract), but I think that mindset's helped me cut down on reinforce charges on bot missions where I'm able to clutch out long enough to clear objectives without biting it by just booking out if things get too spicy or doing hit-and-run to thin the numbers down enough to cut through to whatever I'm trying to blow up.

The AC is great against bots because of their slow speed. The berserkers, especially the jetpack berserkers, are an exception but even the choppy boyz aren't too quick if you can land some staggering shots on them. The only thing that sucks about engaging them at distance is that they're typically too far away to toss stratagems at unless you're servo-assisted.

That mannable HMG turret seems weirdly better for bots than for bugs, solely because it can actually make short work of Hulks and below but can't do poo poo against a charging Charger.

Probably some good synergy if someone else brings EMP mortar or shield generator too.

Those Helldive difficulty extracts are rough.

It's too bad the marksman rifles are such poo poo - low damage, small magazines. Why would a rifle like that have so few rounds in a magazine?

I gave the stalwart another go and it's pretty good for clearing out trash mobs but it's not great against anything else. The sickle is just better at everything.

Regular machinegun is much more comfortable than the stalwart if you manage your mags+reloading well.
Penning hive guardian plates and full penning brood commanders makes you much better at mowing down mixed groups of bugs.

I'm overall enjoying the change of pace with bots, but add me to the long list of people who think rocket raiders and cannon towers need some attention. Getting 1 shot from offscreen with 0 warning gets real old, real fast. I like the idea of there being a red dot on you right before they launch so you at least have some indication and counterplay potential.

Also, autocannon now has my vote for best support weapon. It's good on bugs but drat it's even better on bots.

Re: the slugger, if you think it feels off it may be because of the travel time on the round. It's not hit scan and if something is far away you'll need to lead your shot a bit. Taking into account the fraction of a second travel time with enemy movement may explain the "I feel like I hit that" frustration that can pop up. Try it with the stun grenade, practicing on perfectly still targets helped me get a better feel for aiming it. I also disliked it until I gave in and ADS'd it, that precise dot really helps. I'm not sure why it seems worse on the slugger versus other weapons, but I think it's because the projectile is so drat small. Once I realized what was going on with it it was less frustrating.

Cannon towers stop causing problems once you start putting Spear reticles on them. You can always see them from kilometers away.

They start causing problems real fast when your game host drops your group 50m from a tank base with two of them. Being down 10 tickets 3 minutes in, we were off to a great start.

Small projectiles is right. I've lost count of how many slugs and rifle rounds I've seen pass harmlessly through the armpit of a trooper.

This is just straight up not true. A cannon turret can tank 4 spear shots to the front.
"But what if they're turned away" then just shoot them with the autocannon and kill it faster while using less ammo and having an actually good weapon in your hands.

outposts, points of interest, objectives and extraction points are all pulling from a pool of premade variations but that isn't any different than rocks or trees and they make up maybe 5-10% of a map.

I think the general theme of bots is that the further they are, the more dangerous. Turrets, tanks and rocket devastators and chaingun devastators can quickly cause your team to deathspiral. If your team cant reliably take them out from a distance without strategems they can quickly ball up in to a death machine.

I think it's more like

bots at short range: dangerous, possibly surrounding you
bots at medium range: get eaten by stratagems and support weapons
bots at long range: dangerous again, hard to strat, may snipe you with rockets/cannons

this is where the spear is excellent bc you can gently caress them up at even longer range. i struggled to ever find a use for the spear with bugs but i am delighted that it's got a good niche against bots. being able to take out a lot of big heavy stuff from range is so so nice

the chaingun bots are way more dangerous up close where they're accurate enough to spray you down in a second. the rocket travel speed on devastators is also slow enough that you can see them fire and dodge out of the way before they land, which i think makes them a little bit less scary if they haven't caught you out in the open

the problem with bots is it very quickly spirals into a massive horde of bots coming for you and if you didnt squash them immediately your best chance is to just disengage completely

Bots in general get much more threatening the more *different* kinds of capabilities get involved; and their optional objectives lean into this.

Berserkers on their own rarely kill you - but add a Heavy D or Scout Strider / MG Raider that aims well and they can cause you make a positioning choice that leads to being very dead.

Raiders aren't all that threatening - Till they throw a grenade into your only LOS break from a Turret or Tank.

Rocket Raiders typically miss - Till you're aiming at a Hulk Eye while it bears down on you.

Etc.

But once you're being pressured in all these different ways it's only a matter of time before they get lucky, or you gently caress up.

Had a bot geological survey on Helldive go very wrong. Was just doing it duo with one friend and it was mostly going okay until we got to the main survey site. There was no way we were going to hold it as two people so we activated one at a time and hosed off to throw 380s and walking barrages into the objective. Then we baited the survivors out with one person while the other snuck in to start the next survey.

Unfortunately, by the end of the third survey, it turns out we deformed the ground so much around the probe that it was impossible to access the terminal again; it was literally located about a person's height above our heads. We spent our reinforcements down to zero trying to reach it, and our attempt to throw down a resupply pod to use as a step stool failed when a rocket devastator shot it the moment it landed. Luckily, it turns out SOS beacons are either indestructible or at least more resistant, and was able to use that to barely reach the terminal before the mission timer ran out.

So yeah, watch out for sustained terrain deformation around objectives.

I've been taking the Stalwart on bot drops and have found it very effective. You can generally take out lower tier mobs in a couple of shots with the AC coming into play for anything heavier.

Pack sentries on any of these kinds of missions. Especially the ems. Ems, autocannon, and rocket and you’ll be safe. Or at least you could give the enemies a good distraction.

Bonus points if you can put the sentries high up so nothing can reach it easily
