SexyBlindfold posted:also figure i'll ask here because i don't know where else - it's the year 2024, is it ok to just use the image's original url or are we still expected to rehost it. is hotlinking still a thing Bit of an old comment, but I just caught up with the thread and... imo everyone should still rehost things whenever possible. This thread is a perfect example of broken images from dead originals in TYOOL 2023/4. It sucks reading posts from just a few months ago referencing a "This image has been removed" block and no context to what it even was. Basically everything from tumblr got copyright struck, and like 1/5 tweets (though tweets already aren't great for non-twitter users). This is important especially with Ryoko Kui, since she's already purged art multiple times. Some was Daydream stuff that got removed when it was published, but people have pointed out some of it that didn't make it into the books and is now only available in piracyland.

Pureauthor posted:Canaries should definitely be given something to do in this season so yeah 55 seems natural. yeah, given they're the most front and center group of characters other than the protagonists on the cour 2 promotional image thing i cannot imagine the extent of their actions this season are 'talk to kabru in a meeting' and 'enter the dungeon, cliffhanger for next season' which is all they get if the anime doesn't get to the fight in 53-55 e; actually, there's a quick shot at 1:13 in the trailer of the eye on thistle's book opening, which i'm fairly sure is from the end of chapter 55. I can't think when else that happens sharkmafia fucked around with this message at 07:18 on Mar 29, 2024 |

I just finished watching the Wizardry OVA. I'm a bit surprised at just how much of its influence made its way into Dungeon Meshi, from a cunning jester-like figure to spellcasters becoming faint after casting spells to a "demon" lurking at the bottom level and the dungeon falling apart once they're defeated. e: Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOTHNoODYmY&t=1054s

Honestly, makes sense. Ryoko Kui's very obviously influenced by classic rpgs. Hell, Laios' party at the beginning is a classic Wizardry party: 2 fighters and a samurai in the front, a wizard, priest, and thief in the back. Even down to the thief being functionally useless in combat, but essential for disarming traps.

There was also a picture of pretty familiar looking characters with wizardry classes assigned to them on Kui's old blog before serialization. Laios: Fighter -> Lord Izutsumi: Fighter -> Ninja Marcille: Mage -> Bishop Chilchuck: Thief Falin: Priest Senshi: Fighter -> Samurai

Huh, the original concept for Senshi being a dwarven samurai does explain his name. I guess it just stuck...

Sort of a tangent, but that reminds me that Chilchuck is very notably never described as a thief or anything similar. He's just a professional lockpicker/trap specialist (who runs the union). Which makes sense from a worldbuilding perspective, ie: why in the world would everyone be hiring thieves to enter dungeons with them, but it stands out for being a notable departure from standard fantasy tropes.

Yeah, the standard D&D thief archetype is kind of a weird blending of two fairly different inspirations from fantasy novels. Bilbo in The Hobbit gets hired to be a "burglar" despite never having stolen anything in his life and getting kind of offended that a dozen randos just invited themselves into his house to ask him to do so, while the Gray Mouser from Fritz Leiber's novels is unapologetically a thief but nobody is really recruiting him to go on adventures; he just goes around stealing things with his best buddy.

I like the animation in the second OP, but think the music from the first is a bit catchier. Some good stills in the new ED... love this one of the Canaries... and this one of Kabru's party dealing with the living armor...

there's a short comic in one of the daydream hours that's an immediate follow-up to that scene (and removes any ambiguity):
