also late to mid-range chat but DeAndre Ayton's elite midrange game is one of the reasons I mostly leave him alone because I find it super fun to watch

Uhh yeah congrats to DominAyton who's midrange game, which is slightly beyond the free throw line and also inside of the 3 point line, is elite

The absolutely hideous things teams did to exploit illegal defense rules.

They banned putting one guy in an iso and sending four guys to the other side of the floor when Hubie started using Jordan that way to exploit the illegal defense rules. Then Sloan figured out he could put Greg Ostertag out on the 3pt line to space the floor and the other big had to follow him despite Ostertag having no business out there so he could get a clean side of the floor to run PnRs.

Honestly, the big change in basketball is now they do that but they make sure that the guy they're putting on the 3point line can actually shoot it, which is imo quite reasonable and better for basketball.

I'm not sure if everybody knows, but the league is using a different motion tracking system this season, that is more granular. In the past the cameras would translate video footage of players into their center of gravity (so that players bodies where a single dot in the data), whereas now the players' hips/ankles/heads/etc are captured as separate dots. There are plenty of bugs in the system, which I won't talk about. But it produces a ton of data. Check this out:

https://i.imgur.com/Zbuw4ub.mp4

When Ja goes up for the block, that is the highest recorded hip height on a jump we have camera footage for, 82.3 inches.

And this

When Jericho Sims goes up to catch the lob, that is the highest recorded shoulder height on a jump, 105.4 inches.

If they're tracking ankles that means we could potentially track the angle/extension of Draymond's groin kicks before and after his suspension so we can objectively assess whether the therapy is working

Hopefully we eventually get enough data to do a realistic rendering of his knee and shin obliterating another dudes crotch like from that sniper game where you can get a slow-mo replay of shooting a nazi's nuts off.

This is very cool. To see these moments is good but the fact they came in rather mundane plays is really interesting to me. Doing the best jump we have measured in a random play that no one knew about for 4 months. It’s comforting.

Both are good enough to beat the Nuggets in 7 imo, both match up very well with Ant and SGA, to say nothing of any of the other collection of excellent players on either squad. It'll come down to health which is why I'm glad the Nuggets are being very cautious with Murray
