MikeJF posted:We see on occasion that the viewscreen is 3D in TNG, I like to imagine that plenty of the console displays can be if they need to be, it's just that the camera is 2D so we don't notice. That's what I meant by depth of field, the "looking through a window" kind of 3D, as opposed to stuff jumping out at you like Jaws 15. I'm pretty sure that's what they were trying to show with those side angles in TNG where you see the side of the person's face and the stuff around the corner of the screen on their end, instead of just a flattened face-on view like looking at a conventional 2D projected image.

The ring girl would take over the ship and try to send a coded message to Starfleet command to spread the video, but the Romulans, thinking it is valuable intelligence, intercept the message and get pwned

I think Quark would continue to unlawfully commercially exploit the images of his patrons no matter how offended the modern audiences are by it. That’s just how Quark rolls. If anything he would just start offering customer reward cards that when you sign up for it Quark gets rights to your image and likeness for perpetuity throughout the universe. That part is in the fine print, written in Tamarian.

Quark is so charming that people forget that he’s also the infamous scumbag known as Quark. Selling deepfake Holoporn is exactly what he’d be doing no matter the timeframe the show was made in.

Season 4 of ENT definitely does rule. Glad SE3 and 4 at least got made because they're pretty good contrasts and means the show has more variety in tone and content than like, the entirety of Voyager lol. I like how many of these episodes are about establishing some iconic future Trek poo poo, like the Vulcan on their way to becoming what they end up being in the later series or the first motions towards establishing the Federation, it's doing what the first two seasons should have, but the idea of this enormous tragedy and existential threat earth had to face first before what essentially becomes their Golden Age has made for a good second half to this show. Generally thinking ENT is a pretty good show, I absolutely was hating Voyager by the end lol.

MikeJF posted:Ferengi capitalism has nothing on real life 21st century capitalism. Their poo poo is basic. Remember how Nog was shocked to discover that humans in the 20th century smoked tobacco and poisoned their own atmosphere with atomic weapons? Ferengi are capitalists but they long ago achieved a balance between exploitation and self-destructiveness, it's no good if you exploit your customer base to death. We're barbarian throwbacks to them, running rampant with no concern for market stability or future profitability.

That's all sorts of wrong considering that they could have just shot some random similarly built planet in the middle of nowhere, or if they wanted to kill humans, target some backwater human colony in planet Dogg in the Rivert system in the middle of the sticks.
