To join you have to take a test that does basic math, general sciences, language, some mechanical reasoning and electronics aptitude. All branches use the same test. That test then gives you a series of scores in specific fields that military jobs care about. For any job you want to join there is a minimum score in whatever fields that job cares about before you can even begin the process. Alternatively you can be dumber than a god drat box of rocks like little Rittenhouse here and get a score so low the service just says "Nah, pass. Forever. Don't come back."

I've met some colossally stupid motherfuckers in my time and they were able to land military employment. And I do mean colossally stupid - difficulty following basic orders due to lack of understanding, constant and costly fuckups, only barely able to function in a barracks because their bunkmates were always on their rear end steering them in the correct direction, the whole nine yards.

And yet somehow, these guys not only got in, but some are STILL in.

I cannot possibly imagine how badly you have to score to not even manage to get in, but also to be told that you can never try again.

I think this is the risk these reactionaries take when they crawl out of the sewer of anonymity in Twitter and let nornies hear them talk out loud.

You'd think they'd be more prepared the last time some conservatives brain went all BSoD when asked to define wokeness lol.

It's weird. Everyone on both sides knows "woke" means "it's when there are gay or black people", but you get the sense that a prominent conservative just coming out and saying that would shatter the illusion and mean they couldn't use it anymore. Hence all the verbal diarrhea whenever someone asks one of them to define it.

You're overthinking the definition. It's just "bad thing that is bad." it's the same with the way socialist, communist, or a dozen other things have been used in the past.

It forces fascists out of their normal rhetorical style. Words don't have meaning to fascists they just have feelings. Woke is the bad people and bad things and bad stuff and bad places and bad times that they don't like and that makes them angry and is what they can yell at with their two minutes hate sessions. It was socialism last week, it'll be a different word next week and it will all have the same feeling to them.

A definition makes them engage with something that is not purely tummyfeels and deal with an actual topic, where words have meaning that they would then have to reckon with.

Bonus points for them usually tripping over the "quiet part out loud" rakes and just saying who it is they hate.

I think a definition given by a lawyer working for the person who uses that word the most out of anyone, who can be punished for lying when he gives it and knows that (lawyer), is pretty solid. At that point their options are disagree with the most authoritative definition in existence, say the quiet part out loud, shove you in a box at the first possible opportunity, and/or brain melt rage mode

The "DEI" shift seems relatively recent, though. A change within the past few months, at least. Does anyone have an idea what may have caused it?

I know it was something Elon Musk was (very poorly) complaining about in some interviews, but even considering his media purchase power, I also know he is not the most original thinker.

Christopher Rufo is a thought leader in the fascist sphere and it was a pet project of his to make DEI another meaningless propaganda hate buzzword. It worked, because the right wing media took his idea and ran with it when they recognized they could transform another phrase into a racial slur.

it's not even a novel transition, it's an identical pivot along the exact same lines as how they made "critical race theory" a culture war target

it even has all of the same hallmarks of how the target audience

- has no need to understand what the gently caress it even is

- within a few months of it being traded around right wing media telephone-game antics, any truth of what CRT/DEI gets replaced in their minds with absurdist imaginings

- they will use it as coded racism from beginning to end

Boeing had some embarrassing safety lapses. People are seeing planes fall apart and instead of blaming capitalism they blame minorities; by their logic it must be due to under qualified minority hires that made careless mistakes. Same thing about that cargo ship that knocked down a bridge in Baltimore.

They're trying to make the argument that well intentioned liberals are causing bigger problems by pushing in unqualified applicants in critical positions like airline pilots or doctors. When the president of Harvard got pressured into resigning over plagiarism allegations it opened the door to put any minority under the academic microscope.

The point is that race and racism is the engine that drives right wing politics in America certainly since the civil war if not since the founding.

Since the Civil Rights movement it’s been necessary to use euphemisms for BLACK PEOPLE so it’s been affirmative action, busing , woke, CRT and now DEI.

But those are just different euphemisms for what amounts to the same thing.

They've been complaining about DEI for about as long as it's been a thing. It's the one thing that actually exists in some real capacity and actually does what they're complaining about. They just invented other things to complain about most of the time because going after DEI directly was too brazenly racist/sexist.

The way people get got in it is semi-literacy that not only kills their english score, but affect how well they can answer the arithmetic and other questions.

I’ve seen stuff about Rittenhouse being barely literate and struggling with big words amd pronunciation, and it’d be similar to the other cases where people just bomb the ASVAB. Similar to lot of poorer middle school students demolishing all tests they take regardless of the subject, because their near-illiteracy robs them of the chance to really answer in any topic.

IIRC, In 2020 he held some event in Texas with the families of people who were murdered by immigrants, and they had portraits of their departed loved ones, and Trump autographed them with a big beaming smile on his face.

At least he didn't toss them into the crowd afterwards.

I'm pretty sure what's happening in recent years is that so much information now exists, American capitalism is not going to be content until the only people capable of saving money or building generational wealth at all are the ones whose incomes are passive and/or illegal, and it's clearly heading that way. Also, so much information now exists, people can easily find out why life has been getting worse for forty years, and that basically every modern problem humans face has proven solutions that have already been tried somewhere in any society with enough total wealth. So I think the people who own the media are faced with the question of "what do we do about them inevitably wanting to murder us" and the side of the aisle they pitch to answers that dilemma with either "make them not want to murder us specifically" or "distract them until I'm too dead of old age to care".

Why would he settle for some small town police dept at this point? He's famous! Admired by the right far and wide for shooting a felon, a wife beater, and a pedophile. With that kind of background, he knows he deserves far more than getting paid $12/hr.

There was a Twitter post I'm trying to find from one of his handlers (could have been an April fools prank but it sounded plausible) talking about all the time and money spent on curating a particular image of Kyle to the public, and how he had all this support and resources avaliable to get into/graduate college and start a career. And how he completely squandered those opportunities, because he's a dumb, violent teenager that can't think beyond the consequences of his impulses.

That and I don't think he was really mentally ready for the fame. Becoming a darling of the right means that suddenly he has to speak on behalf of millions of fans. What would his life be like now had he not shot 3 people, and merely spent the evening in Kenosha looking like a tryhard in front of some car dealership? Probably not much more pathetic than he turned out with the fame and notoriety he got by shooting people.

I imagine it will be similar for Daniel Penny.

I feel quite bad for him, to be honest. Even the worst assholes in society deserve a zealous defense within the limits of the law, I don't think you can blame a criminal defense attorney for having a client who has legitimately done terrible things, and I don't think you can blame them for taking every available legal avenue to provide a defense. You can, of course, be quite upset that this quality of representation is available on a very unequal basis, but that's a separate issue.

I think this attorney quite rightly resents his former client for taking an unimaginable boon, a wealth of funds and effort spend first on his defense and then on providing the opportunity to move on with his life, and pissing it away because he's too loving dumb, and I get why he feels that way. I've seen similar things in my line of work, and if you are committed to the job you do, you don't like watching someone treat your efforts and expertise with utter contempt.
