Keep it up!

With my own boozing I've never been someone who wants to drink every day or indeed more days than not so going the week without booze is fine (if I do nothing social in a pub/bar). My issue is always when I do drink not knowing when to stop and even though I tell myself I'll feel like poo poo the day after, somehow repeatedly convincing myself in the evening that no, tomorrow will be the one time that I'll wake up feeling fine with no hangover anxiety that makes functioning a billion times harder.

I was drinking Carling, jagerbombs and baby Guinness the night before I threw in the towel, pretty sure I was on an empty stomach, sank a good 10pints before the shots started flowing and I don't really remember a whole lot until I woke up in the carpark in my car at 4am and drove up the road to my mums house because my wife had locked me out. I spent the next day in and out of consciousness on her bathroom floor rising only to be sick and pass out again.

I definitely feel better for it, I'm carrying less water weight and fat, less IBS flare ups, weekend mornings are no longer written off to sleeping away hangovers and I've got many extra monies to use for more productive and interesting tasks and hobbies.

I dont tend to go out drinking much these days, or drink much when I do - it's the cans of beer in front of the TV in the evening without really thinking about it that I'd like to give up on.

Weirdly the easiest way to avoid that I found was to straight up not buy alcohol. If I have friends coming round I can always go buy some but not having it around is good. Not for everyone of course

This doesn't work when alcohol just shows up at your house constantly just because my in-laws asked if I liked whiskey 10 years ago and I stupidly said yes and so there's never been less than 10 bottles of it in the house ever since no matter how fast I try to drink it (not very fast)

Yeh I've never been able to keep alcohol (or chocolate/biscuits/ice cream) in the house because I have zero self-control and if it's there then I will consume it every day till it's gone.

I have 4 supermarkets and 3 corner shops within a ~10min walk of my house, so it doesn't stop me if I really have my mind set on drinking, but it can help if it's pissing down or I need a shower before going out or I just can't be arsed.

It's honestly annoying cos I wish I had the self-discipline to be able to have a drinks cabinet with various spirits and liqueurs so I can have a cocktail if the mood takes me, or to always have a few beers in the fridge if I want one or two after work, but I just can't do that.

Growing up with an alcoholic mother who would drink anything in the house if it wasn't hidden or nailed down (including some gifts to me from special people that I was keeping) meant that I actively looked forward to getting my own place so I could have a booze trolley for the occasional cocktail evening or dinner party or whatever because I like having a nice bottle or two of gin, rum, tequila, whisky etc to savour on occasion.

Going out to socialise in basically any of the bars in Luxembourg on the other hand means I basically drink for free because the bartending community here is close knit/incestuous, which is where my self control starts to evaporate.

In my experience if you're a bartender and only a functional alcoholic rather than a degenerate cokefiend you're doing comparatively ok

Feel this one man. Only problem was that when I did finally have my own place (as a result of my Dad dying of his alcoholism lol whoops) I had also become an alcoholic and my drinks cabinet was always empty.

I wasn't a big drinker at home tbf but if I knew there was a bottle of wine or some spirits in there then I'd be smashing my way through them as pre-drinks before going on a bender at my local or in town. It really sucked.

Overcoming my lovely relationship with alcohol has been amazing. :toot: me and djf have TWO drinks cabinets all full of different drinks and mixers and it's so nice to be able to just have a nice glass of whisky or a cocktail on the weekend.

Lol

The guy who I was covering for by writing the pub quiz the last couple of weeks had taken some time off to try to reign in his unhealthy habits

I saw him on Saturday before I started a shift at the bar at 6 and he stuck his head round the toilet door to offer me a line of coke (I said no)

Congratulations on levelling off, it's nice to hear from people who have done that instead of having to go fully sober. I quite like getting mildly inebriated sometimes! But as you obviously know having a parent with drinking issues makes it harder for our own relationship with inebriants to be healthy.

Absolutely no hate or judgement on people with those issues, but I've never been a big drinker at all. I've got a few very nice bottles of whisky etc here and I can never bring myself to drink anything. I'll have the odd beer and that's it.

I've never smoked or done any drugs either. I have a terrible relationship with caffeine and chocolate.. I doubt it's comparable though.

(I just finished watching Loudermilk on netflix and that's about a bunch of recovering addicts and it was a very enjoyable dark comedy)
