That one's marginally more understandable in a "look, if you just want to shortcut the janky stealth/combat parts of AP this is how you do it" sense. But it definitely mutated into "everyone knows AP is basically unplayable without Chain Shot" at some point.

Crouch walking is just one of the weird gameplay things you have to get over when playing a stealth game, like enemies forgetting where you are after ten seconds. It doesn't make you that much less visible, and it's hell on the knees and hips.

From MGS3 onward enemy sightlines are much improved and they can spot your head peeking over the wall. Changing your stance is something that's pretty crucial for a good stealth game imo.

MGS5 had excellent controls because all of this worked with a single button and you could go from high to low and vice versa while moving from cover to cover

I think the Hitman trilogy learned from this since it has about the same thing going on, especially if you go Suit Only that requires Metal Gearing it up.

When I replayed Alpha Protocol, went full shotguns, cleared entire rooms of enemies in moments. It's hard for them to fight back when a single shot knocks them to the ground. So it just ended up with me bursting into every room like an explosion and in moments everyone is on the floor. Stealth + pistol must be so boring.

My favorite thing to do in Cyberpunk was hack through a building from the outside pinging everything in it, then shooting them all through the world with the busted rifle that had like infinite wall penetration.

I heard they nerfed that with the fixes and I just don’t think I can go back.

I also recall there being a mission where if you show up in the heavy armor the guards assume you’re with them and will just let you in the front door.

They really gotta give the game the remaster treatment. The decision trees and game reactivity have been constantly praised, wrap it in a game that’s actually fun to play!

yeah that was the russian consulate iirc? you could also bullshit your way in if you were playing the ng+ mode that unlocked after going through as the newbie where you basically drill instructor past them like a hardass. and while it's not a remaster it DID just hit gog.com with updates that make it play nice on modern systems and stuff, so it's got at least a little love. :unsmith:

There's an entire mission in Alpha Protocol that you can just skip if you finesse the conversation with your Russian informant. It's a red herring mission he sends you on because he doesn't like you.

The funny thing is that there's a character you meet on that mission. Never go on it, they never show up for the rest of the game.

If you piss off the informant before the embassy mission he tips them off and the embassy is guarded by Marines instead of the usual guards.
If you then go to this mission in heavy combat armour the marines think you’re one of them and wave you through.

Yeah you should definitely learn as much as possible about the HZD world because it frames the entire game universe in a much more understandable way. Like, it somehow makes robot dinosaurs extremely believable when everything is the way it is due to human greed, pride, and good ol' fashioned capitalism.

Of course it's a post-apocalyptic world, it had billionaires at some point-- that's a 100% guarantee of total collapse

Huh, I really need to give Cyberpunk another try. I pre-ordered it and played it when it first came out. I know they've fixed the warts, I just haven't had the time to give it another go.

Edit: I started playing Disciples: Liberation, and I enjoy that they don't try to guilt-trip you into going with a "good" faction at the start. After the prologue, you're told about 4 factions that can help you against the Empire. Elves, Mercenaries, Necromancers and Demons. I decided to go with demons, and the first companion, who has been the main character's partner in crime for years, just rolls with whatever I decide to do. No "Oh my God, you used to be pure and good, what happened" or moralizing, just "Hey, you're the brains of our operation, I'm just along for the ride. And ale." He's a cool bro, I hope nothing bad happens to him.

In Dragon's Dogma 2 there's a Sphinx who gives you riddles with treasure rewards for solving them. The first riddle "The Riddle of the Eyes" is kind of a fun screw you to the player. The Sphinx directs you to a dungeon right next to where she is, asking you to bring her the most valuable item from it. The dungeon is actually fairly short but is absolutely crammed full of enemies so it is a slog to get through. You get to the end and find a chest with a rotten apple in it. You might think this is a metaphor and bring it back to the Sphinx but no, this is not the correct answer. Instead what you're actually supposed to do is go into the dungeon, turn around and climb up into an alcove above the entrance which has the real item. So you don't even need to go through the dungeon.
