It can't be understated how horrible it was to play against Eldar in 2nd edition of 40k.

The imperium of man is a sprawling galaxy-wide empire consisting of millions of worlds, trillions of people and about as many tits. It would be a waste of resources to protect their chests when those resources could go towards a slightly bigger pauldron on a space marine or even more exotic drugs for a noble's breakfast

Catachans are my favorite subfaction in 40k; they're not in the limelight like the Cadians/Krieg, but they get a little trickle of miniatures and books every now and then that keeps them around the setting. They exist in that sweet-spot where they're juust fleshed-out enough that you can portray them however you want; whether as comically-ridiculous space-Rambos, compassionless Vietnam allegories, or anything in-between.

I also first collected these guys because they were pretty much the only army that was depicted as being made up of multiple races in their art and models waay back in 2001:

I got mixed up and pictured COBRA, and frankly they'd fit right in, probably as an Alpha Legion catspaw.

Really, the whole fun of 40k is that it's built out of unsubtle pop culture ripoffs and pastiches as well as historical, you can make your own army or even subfaction with pretty much whatever aesthetic you want. The Imperial Guard are particularly popular for that, as I said a lot of armies are clearly aimed at crossover with historical wargame fans and history nerds in general.

Oddly enough, this actually makes it more stand-out suspicious when someone shows up with what's blatantly a Nazi army, since the ground Imperium aesthetics are already close enough the extra effort is frankly unnecessary. At least especially since the management change GW's been pretty open about how they don't want anything to do with those types and pretty sure it's store and event policy to eject them immediately.

Honestly, my dream is that the Henry Cavill WH40k project has one episode that's basically a complete Predator rip-off, with a bunch of outmatched Catachans in the jungle getting picked off one-by-one by some minor demon. Only a small few survive through sheer ingenuity and willpower. Then, as the finally appear to have run out of options and the demon is about to kill them, these enormous Space Marines show up and immediately wipe out the demon with almost no effort at all. The few survivors are overjoyed, until it turns out that the Space Marines are Grey Knights, and immediately after wiping out the demon they turn around and kill every remaining survivor for having witnessed that demons exist.

The imperium civilians knows that chaos exists though don't they? Do the grey knights purge everyone who has ever fought chaos?

Do cadians straight up not exist in the game anymore?

No, it's not the vague idea that Chaos exists and has huge amounts of cultists troops/mutants that worship it that gets people executed. It's witnessing and actually fighting no-poo poo Daemons that might get troops executed, depending on which Inquisitor is running the show. Fighting heretic troops and cultists is a-ok, as long as you touch nothing and burn the bodies afterwards. If they summoned daemons though and you saw that, all bets are off.

Knowing that Grey Knights (an army of specialist psyker Space Marines whose job is daemonhunting) exist would get you mind-wiped or executed, unless you were incredibly high on Imperial hierarchy. Or it used to, before the Great Rift tore the galaxy a new rear end in a top hat. The Chancellor of Imperial senate, which is basically one step down from the High Lord of Terra, flat-out stated that before the Great Rift, he would have been killed or mind-wiped for learning about Grey Knights, but that ship has sailed, and their previous policy of over-zealous information control is now basically meaningless.

Do cadians straight up not exist in the game anymore?

The inquisitor who was in charge when Cadia fell tried to stop their evacuations because she was terrified that the survivors might be corrupted, but she got fragged by the troops.

They even walked back the "see a demon get executed" stuff after the great rift opened since they're common enough now that it's not as much of an option. I think they basically retconned it so that kind of thing was common in the lulls between black crusades but when poo poo's really going down you don't have the luxury.

Cadia got blowed up but all the survivors immediately founded new settlements and there are now dozens of "cadia reborn" "cadia 2" "cadia: even harder" planets.

In the darktide video game there's a voice archetype for cadian survivors. One of the funniest exchanges is when the "snarky rear end in a top hat" archetype goes "oh my God shut the gently caress up about cadia"
