Cody genuinely did read the market and actually bolster it. He's not the only reason the indies and NJPW were hot in 2016-2018, but his influence and decision to leave WWE when he did and wrestle absolutely everywhere was extremely important. He's a carny and a liar (sometimes affectionate, sometimes not) and his sense for that is strong.

There is a large group of fans who are, honestly, 'Cody fans', in the sense that there were fans who didn't care about anything but their guy, etc. This was pretty clear when he left and was a big star for ROH despite being pretty disliked by the usual ROH/indie fan because he was able to pull in his fans but not completely turn off people who didn't like him. And as silly as his list at the time was, if you were a Cody fan who went 'alright Cody we'll give this a shot sure why not', he actually did do almost everything he said he would even if it meant showing up in TNA for an hour, showing Dave Meltzer was a dummy (lovingly) by putting together All In and being willing to wrestle Nick Aldis on the biggest night of his career (and having a drat fun match out of it) just because he's Cody Rhodes, and a hell of a lot more than anybody could have bought into. For better or worse, a lot of people believe in Cody in the way this subforum believes in, say, Bryan Danielson.

Cody is the Jay z of wrestling. He’s a good wrestler who has some classic moments but ultimately is a fed who kept his ears close enough to the street that he could clout chase on different styles and ultimately became a parody of himself.
