Jack Tripper's wingman.

Interesting thing too in that the original game appears to require two controllers in order to play.

That doesn’t sound that crazy to me. The 2 controller setup was already a thing for Goldeneye (or Robotron 64, or other games). You’d maybe think that it would cut the user base since people who wouldn’t have a second controller couldn’t play the game, but n64 controllers were cheap, like half the price of the games cheap. And after like the first year, Nintendo included two controllers with like every standard console since they leaned hard into the n64 being the group party box. I don’t remember anyone back in the day having a n64 and only one controller.

Don't forget there were also third-party controllers that were even cheaper too.

Oh I'm aware others utilized two controllers, that was a thing even on the NES (Duck Hunt being an example I stumbled into as a kiddo), I was just surprised to see that it was actually required in order to play, not just a gimmick.

This game is barely a prototype so that wouldn’t be in the final, especially not with Nintendo’s certification checks. Makes sense to put the menus a normal player would see on controller 1 and then level select menus on controller 2 so that they can keep the menus separate and disable them at release.

That menu is annoying. It’s a bunch of icons that you have to select before you get a label telling what it does. It’s an example of “Mystery Meat” navigation

Also the character designs are 1998 as hell - westerner draws manga style for the first time. likely also scratch art

The main character on the menu screen is a case of "copy Leona from Dominion Tank Police but put a hat on her."

It's a bit more literal than that, her face is directly copy-pasted from page 27 of Shirow's Intron Depot 2 artbook.

Gotcha - that's placeholder art to set the vibe.
This would have shipped in the same era as Oni and Shogo. Too many years have passed, there's no cringe left. I just have to smile.

A localization prototype of the original Legend of Zelda has been released:

Pretty cool although I’m not sure how different it’ll be aside from bug fixes. A Japanese FDS proto that leaked years ago is far more interesting imo.

TCRF is building up their findings article.

Console differences document FDS -> NES port so this is a mid point

Still, we never know why or how these high ticket items change hands.

Holy poo poo, what a blast from the past! I definitely used that book when I was in primary school. :aaaaa:

To make my post relevant to the thread, I live for the day when a prototype of the N64 version of Mother 3 gets leaked or details about differences or changes from the final GBA version come out.

For anyone who's interested in what was planned for the series, here's a synopsis of Fear Effect Inferno's story with the various endings. Shame we ended up with Sedna instead.

Triad boss Frank Minkz holds Hana's "contract", and is unwilling to let her buy her way out. So Hana and her friends decide the only way she will ever be free is to kill Minkz. They infiltrate his mansion on an assassination mission, but because Minkz has been forewarned by Hana's former fixer Jin (really Yim Lau Wong, the demonic King of Hell) it goes disastrously wrong and Hana is shot by Minkz, dying in Rain's arms. But then she wakes up in a strange hospital...

Hana is actually trapped in Hell, but a series of dreams - or visions - lead Rain to seek a way to rescue her, aided (with varying degrees of reluctance) by Glas and Deke. They ultimately learn the only way to enter Hell is to die; with the help of Wee Ming (from FE1) they do so, using talismans to give them the chance of returning to life once they find Hana.

They eventually discover everything has been set up by Yim Lau Wong as a way to overcome his one weakness; as a god he is bound by the rules of fate, every action already predestined. But if he were to gain the free will of a mortal, he would be the most powerful being on earth...

The Endings
1: Rain, Glas and Deke are restored to life, but Hana stays in Hell with Yim Lau Wong, the combination of Rain's and Hana's powers having given him true free will and the ability to break the laws of fate that up to now have constrained him.

2: Hana, Glas and Deke are restored to life, but Rain stays in Hell with Yim Lau Wong. However, she has tricked him by lying about the fate she saw for them, and she destroys herself and Yim Lau Wong out of her love for Hana, to free her from him forever.

3: Hana and Rain both refuse to cooperate with Yim Lau Wong. Knowing that he and Hana are bound together by fate to repeat the same cycle over and over until she breaks it of her own free will, he sighs and with a gesture sends Hana back to the moment she was shot by Minkz.

4: (Good ending) Hana and Rain both refuse to cooperate with Yim Lau Wong. He decides to kill Rain to teach Hana a lesson - but Rain uses her father's ring to absorb his power and give Hana the chance to use her own power. Fate is changed, and Hana, Rain, Glas and Deke are returned to Minzk's mansion at a moment just before the mission goes wrong. This time, Hana kills Minkz, and the gang escape as Glas's bombs destroy the mansion. In Hell, Yim Lau Wong resignedly tells a visitor he failed to foresee that Hana might use her powers to change her own fate rather than his. His guest - the lord of the Western Hell, Lucifer - tells him that he took the wrong approach, and that giving them their desires would have made them his willing slaves. Yim Lau Wong smiles and says perhaps he's right, then offers him a tea.
