Yeah it's real good. It draws from all the roots which is academically interesting but they're also just good-rear end songs. Hard to take it all in at once though because it is loooong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4xrblI8Tvw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuSCmrRPcFI This one's my partner's favorite, very 90s country radio that she was raised on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyXfJi2KZ-A

I think it’s super boring. I couldn’t make it through more than 2/3 of every song without skipping.

Doesn't need to be 78 minutes but I found plenty to like.

Not my cup of tea. It sounds just like any other pop song that shows up on FM country and I'm sure will lure in some new listeners. It has made some right-wing people mad, which is fine by me. This has been stuck in my head for days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hVqrpn8E-4

Apparently Beyonce's new record is missing four or five songs on vinyl so buyer beware

If nothing else, I'm hopeful Beyonce's album will reduce the number of idiots on dating apps that write they listen to everything but country "I love fresh sheets, hate pineapple on pizza, listen to everything but country and am not political"

Saw Tyler Childers tonight in Tulsa and this dude may be the best vocal performer I've ever seen, alongside Chris Cornell. If you get a chance to catch his show I can't recommend enough.

He is indeed an incredible singer. Shoutout to the Amethyst Kiah fan above, too. She and all of her bandmates from Our Native Daughters (sort of a one-shot supergroup from back in 2019) are well worth checking out, singly and collectively. https://folkways.si.edu/songs-of-our-native-daughters

Andrew Marlin said hi to me last night. Mighty Poplar was as good as expected. The crowd was surprisingly old. Greenville, SC and the Peace Center are both incredible.

Man, I only learned about Andrew Marlin last year and he has quickly become one of my favorite musicians. Just an absolute genius of mandolin

I caught Watchhouse a few months ago on their Duo tour, and they were also amazing. They're both such beautiful singers. The crowd was totally silent during every song.

jammiesjammer posted:Any bands or musicians like or similar to sound to Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy yall can reccommend? Dunno if you got any answers, but I would say DOUG PAISLEY (actually toured with Will very early in Doug's career.) His most recent release on a label is called Say What You Like, produced by the main guy in Bahamas. Most of Doug's stuff is very trad and earthy but the production choices make it sound like Don Williams (!) in the 80s. He has 4 prior to that, all at least great. But you can also find a self-released covers album he put out at the start at this year called Sad Old World. Dude can write, dude can play, dude can sing. Dunno if you know about THE ANOMOANON but it's Will's brother Ned, who's played with Will here and there (Viva Last Blues era IIRC) and then he went off and did Anomoanon. The two albums I have from them are Asleep Many Years in the Wood, which will whet your whistle for Oldham/Bonnie Billy type songwriting, or Joji, which is far more jammy/Grateful Dead type stuff. Dunno if it's a direct comparison but I like THE ASHTRAY HEARTS, who mix the Oldham melancholy with Replacements/Westerberg snark and snarl (they do rep Twin Cities, so no shock.) I just flipped the local big city's library cutouts and found a CD by THE CAIRO GANG who co-collabed with Bonnie on an album a ways back. I haven't heard it yet, but it's on Drag City, so I suspect I will like it just fine. For more, er, abstract, more odd vein of his artistry, check out NIMROD WORKMAN's I Want to Go Where Things Are Beautiful, a double dozen or so of home recordings Mike Seeger did in the early 80s when Nimrod was in his 80s. It's all a capella, and sounds equally as haunting as it sounds haunted. I wouldn't play it everyday but it hits me profoundly when I do. Hope any of that works for you!

If you like Nimrod Workman, definitely check out Frank Proffitt, Roscoe Holcomb, and also the Harlan County USA soundtrack (and even better watch the documentary)

Listened to ABB Filmore East 1971 this morning in his honor, and a little Great Southern this afternoon while I was driving. Got to see Dickey live twice, both around 12-15 years ago if I had to guess. He was great the first time, second time I think he was a bit too drunk lol Final Blog Entry fucked around with this message at 21:55 on Apr 19, 2024 |

I had a near spiritual experience at an Allman Brothers show in 2000, I think. It was his second to last show with them, so whenever that was. I guess I would have been 15. All I really remember from it was mushroom visuals projected on the screens behind the band and a pretty long Jessica. It was one of my first concerts and since that day I've been listening to long noodly jams. So even if it was a show from when they were probably kind of falling apart and he was obnoxious, Dickey is to thank for me being a crusty wook for a big part of my life.

Bonzo posted:Why have I never heard of this group? A three piece even. drat Yes, they were a solid band. I used to live in Oxford, MS and got to be friends with the band (except for Cary, the vocalist/guitarist who lived elsewhere), and yes, the bassist was Laurie Stirratt, twin sister of John Stirratt who plays bass in Wilco. Bonus trivia: John was a member of the Hilltops, who were basically Blue Mountain plus him, before he left the band to join Uncle Tupelo who later kinda morphed into Wilco. They released one record as the Hilltops and it's very similar to Blue Mountain if you dig them
