Also, every photo from the 1970s has multiple ashtrays visible in it. When they started to ban smoking in public spaces in the 1980s, some of the greatest resistance came from bar and restaurant owners who predicted it would decimate their businesses. In reality, their businesses flourished because people were more willing to go out to places where they could breathe and also not come home with all their clothes stinking like smoke. My pet theory is that the emergence of "foodie" culture in America in the 80s/90s and all that entailed (celebrity chefs, wider proliferation of interesting ethnic restaurants, etc.) largely stemmed from the fact that people weren't completely destroying their taste buds as a matter of habit.

And then there were the days where you'd walk into a restaurant and they'd ask "smoking or non-smoking?" and the difference was literally one side of the building or the other. The smoke was everywhere regardless.

My mom smoked in the house a ton, teachers would regularly stop me and ask if I was smoking cigarettes. Even when I smoked I didn't smoke in the house. I did smoke in the car until someone pointed out that my kids also ride in that car and it was bad for them. I had never even thought of it before. Now I don't smoke but I do miss looking cool.

State-wide bans on smoking in the US started in the mid-90's and yes, some of the biggest pushback was bar owners and politicians talking about how it would ruin small businesses and drive investment to other states. A few months after the ban in New York was passed, I was chatting with a distant relative who owns a bar in upstate New York so of course a natural question was how it was working out. He said the state-wide smoking ban was one of the best things that had ever happened to his bar: The smokers who go out drinking stayed away for a couple weeks before coming back because hey turns out they still needed somewhere to drink, while the bans let them attract a whole new crowd of people who just wanted a quick beer after work with co-workers or enjoyed darts/billiards, but would never have come when it was a smoke-filled room.

I remember in the late 90's/early 00's my family went to a restaurant that still had smoking/nonsmoking, but they'd also installed one of those really amazing air purifiers right at the divide. We were thrilled to sit in a nonsmoking section that actually didn't smell like smoke

The bar across the street from me is about 90? years old, and somehow grandfathered in to allow smoking. Their non-smoking section became their takeout area during Covid. At some point in there I quit smoking, and now when I go there I come home smelling awful and feeling like I had been smoking myself. It's gross. At least they got rid of the cups of free cigs you could ask the bartender for. I love the place but i'm sure that a LOT of their business is being one of the two or three bars here where you can still smoke.

I grew up during the transition from "Smoking or Non-Smoking" to eventually Massachusetts becoming one of the stricter states regarding smoking (Like, no flavored nicotine products, not even menthols level smoking bans), and it was a bit surreal for me to go to a cigar bar in Portsmouth, NH and smoke in a business establishment. Didn't hate it, but it's not something I'd do regularly.
