The thing that always fucks me up thinking about this is why am I the person that I am? I don't mean like why I am the way I am but why am I this brain controlling this body? Why am I not someone else? I could have been anyone else in history but here I am existing at this time in this body with this brain. How the hell does that work and why am I not anyone else? I don't know that that premise necessarily leads me to reincarnation (or anything else) but it does make my tiny pea brain hurt thinking about it.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone address the whole issue of "we all have souls from past lives" but also there's significantly more people on this planet than originally. So like, did we have a stockpile of souls and like, some got picked first and they've just been in circulation and the rest were printed later? Or do some people just not get souls? Or everyone gets new souls, hot off the press, but these three year olds get used hand-me-downs? Or were souls an invention like halfway through humanity's existence? I need an answer that is consistent both internally and externally and everyone agrees on.

If someone is cryogenically frozen at the moment of death, does their soul stay stuck in that dead body or move on? If it moves on, what happens if some far future technology manages to repair and resuscitate that person?

juggalo baby coffin posted:3 year olds hear stuff in conversation and repeat it and adults are credulous and have lovely memories so they forget they mentioned it around the kid This is it. I did similar things when I was little. After, according to my dad, screaming for my entire first loving year, I started to learn words. I would tell my mum about things that had happened in the 60's, particularly about her favourite cousin who got wiped out on a moped in '63. It freaked her out a lot. The reality was that my grandfather, a clever scallywag, picked up on my tendancy to repeat things I had heard in personal terms, and would tell me about stuff I wouldn't know. He thought it was hilarious. Except the time I told him about a robbery he and his brothers planned but never followed through on. I have no memory of any of this.

juggalo baby coffin posted:my cousin was allegedly a reincarnation bc initially he walked w a limp that my great grandfather only picked up from time in a POW camp in ww2. but like, logically it seems more likely they shared biomechanics and that limp resulted from the muscles not being strong enough (ie from a baby just learning to walk and not having built up the strength yet, and muscle atrophy from malnutrition) There's evidence that even random quirks and habits have a genetic component. But say that's wrong and it's all because you're a reincarnated relative. What's the take away? We try to push kids into stuff their previous lives enjoyed? We make them the sole inheritor of their estate.

Yeah I think we've all had this thought. I think it's a product of this dualist idea we all kind of inherit in our culture that you have some kind of separate being aside from your body. Which you don't, you're you because "you" is a result of this specific body's conscious brain.

redshirt posted:Quantum mechanics is anything but deterministic. I've seen the sentiment popping up randomly a lot lately that people have decided that everything is predetermined and point to the fact that we can "calculate the reactions of everything at a quantum level" to predict everything and therefore everything will play out a certain way. Funnily enough, that is kind of exactly *not* how quantum mechanics work. It's very much "ah but we can do a math so we can just do a lot of math" to try and, idunno, cancel out how chaotic everything is. Quantum predeterminism does seem a very techbro faith.

I think that when people sometimes say that they recall a past life, it's a genuine part of their personality (especially emotionally) that's externalized from their normal ego states. Rather than say that they were literally Napoleon. Like they might have just associated Napoleon with say the strategic and Machiavellian parts of themselves, or being powerful, proud, or vengeful. And the concept of Napoleon is like a nexus of those feelings and modes. my ancestors lived on a hill for 600 years and killed swedes, so I would guess that's where all the axemurdering dreams come from, then?
