After a night of sleep, I'm also half-convinced that (end spoilers) Maldover's complete lack of proactivity is a deliberate homage to video-game antagonists who just loiter in their homebase until the climax (while you're out in the wastes kidnapping the guy who you could have kidnapped any time in the past 20 years, Lee, do you want to make a stop at the nearby town of Filly so you can ensure the safety of the helpless scientist who you know is heading there imminently with the priceless cold fusion chip which absolutely everything hinges on? No, you'd rather just head directly home to Griffith Observatory and sit there doing nothing? Sure, makes sense.)

how else do you get the players to your final set piece?

I think it's very easy to overestimate our own capabilities to learn and understand too. Take for instance, like all of our computer hardware from the 50s is basically forgotten knowledge at this point. The people that know how to repair or work on it are dead or long retired. We have manuals and theoretical understanding of how it works but put even the most highly educated computer scientist in a room with a cray and say "figure out how to make this do something useful" and see how little would get done.

Now plop on top a world setting where education basically doesn't exist, the only reference material is books that may have survived, and ghouls, super mutants, etc. and other warring factions are constantly at your door step trying to break whatever it is you're working on for the fun of breaking it and murdering you and... it makes sense why we remain relatively stagnant.

It's not just that we got bombed back to pre-agrarian society, but that we're also no longer the alpha predators in that world and there's literally no power structures that can maintain an equilibrium long enough to let anyone start building anything substantial outside of extremely secluded environments.

Even the enclave, the vaults, and the brotherhood are at best limited to the remnants of the old world tech that still work and have no interest in sharing that with anyone outside of their bubbles

I guess i'm just not seeing how the NCR's collapse isn't shown. It's literally shown on screen in flashbacks, as well as explained in exposition, and the final death blow is the big action sequence of the final episode. On top of that, the next season seems to be in the same area, so it's not like they've forever memory holed the NCR or something. Lucy and Maximus both lived in Shady Sands and were young when it was blown up, they're probably going to have some questions.

Yes I understand but education and society was rebuilt with the NCR and everything 220 years after the bombs fell. Maybe you won’t relearn things like COBOL but I mean you should know things like Industrial Revolution

There were literal lead farmers in one episode using metal detectors to comb for bullets. I doubt the Gun Runners will show up.

There was a distinct lack of energy weapons in the show. No lasers, plasma or even gamma guns.

Ma June's logbook prominently carries a FoA-adjacent icon of four crosses and a circle, which I assumed was an indication that her doctor wife was or had been one.

(I think we actually also saw a couple of Great Khans as Lucy enters the marketplace outside Filly?)

You know you didn't have to go post that, right?
But it's fine, I guess...

You just keep being you!

What also sucks is the 'race realist' othering of Ghouls. [Episode 2 onwards spoilers]How ghouls becoming 'feral' is codified and inevitable, except for use of the undetailed drug.

We've seen Bethesda turn Super Mutants into the blandest 'orcs' possible, and now they're finishing the job with ghouls.

Vault 15 was meant to fail, supposedly, due to its diverse inhabitants but, while it was a rocky journey, they created one of the better settlements, especially compared to the deeply flawed Vault 8/Vault City.

The show is overly cynical, denouncing and destroying near-every attempt of humans and meta-humans to exist as societies, while trying to 'hello fellow kids' with their vague criticism of corporate America. While being distributed by one of the biggest corporations in America.

Do you think that writing that was a mandate by bethesda instead of something the showrunners wanted to explore? The 'hello fellow kids' argument is as far as capitalist critique goes in the world unless you are part of an actually existing socialist project.

It just makes a lot of sense, as yeah a lot of vault dwellers are going to be naive weirdos to wastelanders, and yeah fun to see. The lead just waking in to that first town with her bright super clean clothes and backpack, and being super suprised no one cares about the random poo poo she's asking them about.

Finished it last night. Enjoyed it a lot. There's a little bit of a problem with plot armor but I think the point of the show is more comedic and character driven than trying to be brutal.

I'm not great with fallout lore or recognizing points of interest so at the end what was the town that Henry approached after running away? Was it New Vegas?

After finishing it last night, I feel confident saying the worst part of the show was Fred Armisen showing up for 3 minutes to do The Fred Armisen Character. Took me right out of the show. Can I not watch one drat show without that guy in it? Rapaport kinda took me out too, but in a more entertaining "WTF?!" kinda way, as opposed to the exasperated sigh of seeing Armisen in another property
