tho I think hbag is updating the fedora version rather than just installing updated packages although it can be argued that updating in-place is just a more involved updating of packages

downloaded someone else's polybar config cos i thought it looked neat and i could gently caress with it a little to fit my setup, ended up loving with it all night getting the fonts to look right and the widgets to work correctly. not complaining, it was satisfying to get it working like the font theyd picked didnt actually have the icons they were using, but i noticed my terminal's font did, so i just had it use that for the icons and hosed with the font sizes until it looked right. and there was a whole brightness widget that just wasnt showing up because it turns out my machine doesnt support [internal/xbacklight], so i had to switch it to just [internal/backlight] and the "power off" setting in the power menu was running "sudo poweroff", which isnt even a valid command. plus you can just have it run systemctl poweroff and you dont even need to sudo

It's just the most "works on my machine" setup you can get. I, for one, simply use whatever ships with KDE Plasma.

The problem with libreoffice is that it's eternally a clunky ~95% compatible office clone, and it can't become better than office without becoming less compatible. To the extent that it very occasionally tries to fix tiny aspects of office's weird legacy crud, like not having two ways to highlight text in Writer, it tends to end up breaking the formatting of office files. A word processor that didn't suck would probably have all the layout and styles stuff work completely differently from Word but then it would be impossible to achieve a good level of compatibility. mystes fucked around with this message at 16:11 on Apr 12, 2024 |

i would use libreoffice if i was at all confident that it wouldnt gently caress up the formatting of my university work. thankfully there is a browser version of word

mystes posted:Even though I don't personally trust it, I think libreoffice would probably be fine for everything most people would do in college at least for word files. You have to get into pretty stupid levels of formatting (like stuff where you probably shouldn't be using word at all in that case, ideally) for it to be an issue. yeah the "stupid levels of formatting" part is what im worried about, because a lot of our assignments have pre-made templates set up to help students with formatting their poo poo in a way that looks nice, and if i dont know exactly how they did it theres always a chance libreoffice is gonna break something
|
# ? Apr 12, 2024 16:19 |

Yeah if they want you to use a specific template and they're going to take off points if something gets changed I probably wouldn't necessarily trust libreoffice for that.

I'm using sway right now because I still haven't been able to figure out why everything kde related and some other stuff is now segfaulting whenever I run it I guess I should create another user to see if it's a problem with my configuration files or something else but I can't be bothered right now Edit: ok I actually created another user and it was fine so I guess it's just a problem with my configuration files or something dumb like that mystes fucked around with this message at 16:43 on Apr 12, 2024 |

Athas posted:I do not get transparent terminals, but I doubly do not get transparent terminals on top of a desktop image with text on it. i like transparent terminals that allow you to blur the background (like terminal.app, windows terminal, etc.). text is far more readable that way a few of them on linux allow you to now, but iirc e.g. xfce's terminal doesn't and just allows transparency, which kinda sucks.
