I would have been about 11 or 12 when this strip was written, but I have a younger brother who was around this kid's age and he had one of those. I hadn't thought of it in years.

Anyway the tech back then was very different. I don't think this kid or my brother were hurt in any way by having a ton of edutainment video games. Modern tablets are a bit different perhaps, since so much stuff is designed to be addictive.

I like the "next week: Headphone TV" bit. The tonal whiplash of going from the usual "we'll have loving space colonies growing infinite food, a student at Detroit Polytechnic made a cardboard model and it's totally happening in a few years" to "uhh, I guess you'll be able to listen to TV on headphones?" is amazing.

Giant Ethicist posted:

I think there's something about being an early adopter, still having the idea (that living books really tapped into) that computers can be really good educational tools if you just let the kid fiddle with them. (Combined with what looks like a pretty laissez-faire parenting style on the author's part, to be fair.)

When people had to sell edutainment software for $20-40 (in 1990s dollars) a pop in a big cardboard box they put effort and attention into the product.

Sadly, modern mobile devices don't really have anything like that.

Kind of worse, I think he drew Jaime Kennedy's "Son of The Mask". Which brings into question everything about Tim's parents and their ability to be parents.

Fitting. April's the reason they have two dogs, and now she's the reason they have one dog. It's like poetry - I don't want to read it.

So Mark did a thing he didn't actually do offscreen and he is so fantastically stupid that he has to be told that they're their to uncover what Tad is covering up.

Again, Mark already knows this. And he couldn't put these activities together. I can't wait for the reveal because it'll be at least as stupid as this setup.

A good writer or even an average one that could string together a plot and some jokes would do really well by writing a low stakes comedy where Mark is genuinely dumb as hell. Lil Abner guy got a kid?
