Eric Raymond jumped in on it, beefed up a lot, and then published it as a printed book. esr invented the term "Open Source" which pissed off rms (Richard Stallman) who invented "Free Software". Calling esr a "GNU/Linux" person would probably piss off both of them. How you feel about that is going to vary by individual. esr also wrote a paper called "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" that got a bunch of CEOs all horned up in the 90s and is probably responsible for a lot of the large projects today with public codebases, like Chromium. And as mentioned, he's a seriously skeezy individual with seriously skeezy opinions on a lot of things. I've personally intervened with him relentlessly hitting on college students at conferences. rms does this too, to an extent, but is nowhere near as aggressive about it.

I would stop short of calling them stains, I think rather they deserve some respect for crafting the torch that so many are now carrying with more grace.
