It doesn't look like the new Ghostbusters movie is going to gross much more than about 200 million, has it finally happened? Has 3 straight box office busts finally convinced Sony to leave this franchise in the grave?

Now that the GB interest has been shown to be diminished, the people who hold onto a lot of the rights might be willing to sell their stakes in it for what they can to Sony or someone else while they're still alive. The old fandom* no longer has any interest in fighting for the franchise's integrity, either, since it's not like they turned out in droves for EXACTLY all the stuff they wanted being given to them in the last 2 films.

This means whatever goes forward might have more freedom to play around with the IP and not be beholden so much to either party's expectations.

(*Nah, I'm kidding. They'll keep this in their back pocket to bitch about changes later, too.)

I thought the one in between the two box office dud reboots of the franchise did good. Why would you approve a sequel in that continuity if it didn't?

I'm a girl, and you're
gnomes, and it's like
what? Yikes.
In 2016 didn't they spend a ton of money buying the rights and setting up some companies to handle what will surely be the massive merchandising demand, and even have a company with the no ghosts image as the logo? I seem to remember them even doing something with the original firehouse in New York. They spent all this time to make Ghostbusters the next massively successful Star Wars like IP, and now they just have to keep making movies until it suddenly all becomes worth it.

Afterlife made about 200 million dollars against an officially 75 million dollar budget (and of course Hollywood accounting means it likely went a lot higher), these absolutely aren't the kinds of returns that a major studio wants for a flagship blockbuster franchise.

The main reason you still see Ghostbusters sequels probably has more to do with the fact that its a known quantity that Sony owns (through Columbia pictures), and Sony is absolutely desperate to leverage one of its IPs into a consistent moneymaker, as it is they only really have Spider-man, they want Ghostbusters to be that kind of franchise but 5 movies in its just not happening.

They should do MIB as a reboot with a gritty sci fi horror tone.

Then when that gets stale we could cross over with other movies. Men In Black Vs. Prince Of Darkness.

It’s funny how there are several sequels to blockbusters in the 80s that were perhaps regarded as meh at the time but people have grown to appreciate more. Like Robocop 2 and Ghostbusters 2 as well, they tried to be proper sequels and not just endless callbacks and which probably helped. Ghostbusters 2 is probably more controversial but I like it, a lot more now than when it came out anyway.

Jimmy Cameras sequels are the exception with both Aliens and Terminator 2 being instantly more successful than the first movies.

Dredd has absolutely nothing to do with the Stallone movie beyond drawing from the same basic source material, its like saying Casino Royale (1967) is a sequel to Casino Royale (2006).

It actually kind of sucks that studios sometimes choose the right people to make sequels for their dusty old IPs because then they point to them and say "see, it can work!" when bankrolling the 50th Ghostbusters reboot.
