Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was good but is hurt slightly by me having seen the old BBC series first. Hard to imagine anyone else in the role once you've seen Alec Guinness as Smiley. I'd also say the plot benefits from being more drawn out across 7 hour long episodes of TV rather than a 2 hour film. The pacing might take a bit to get used to, it's glacially slow in a way you probably couldn't do today, but it works perfectly.

Casino Royale - very good
Quantum of Solace - not good
Skyfall - bad
Spectre - WOATed
No Time to Die - beyond WOATed

A fine list but I'd put Skyfall over Quantum of Solace. QoS wasn't good and it also wasted all of the hype that Casino Royale generated, so it was a failure on multiple levels. Moonraker is really bad but it's the kind of bad I'll put on once every couple of years just to cackle at. Jaws found love.:allears:

I loved every Mission Impossible film, even Mission Impossible 2 which is an INCREDIBLY stupid and dumb and ridiculous movie but that's what makes it so loving charming. It's just silly!

1st is great as a modern version of the original show. 3 has Hoffman in it which instantly raises the bar, then from 4 on they seemed to nail exactly the formula they wanted till they perfected it for Fallout. Dead Reckoning 1 was still a good watch but it was never gonna be able to hold up to the standard Fallout set, what a great film that was.

My nephew has no attention span due to the modern world. He hates movies because they’re too long and they “take forever to get to the point”.

What are some good cranked up movies that might inspire a youth whose attention span is so bad he has to game while listening to a podcast and watch tik toks at the same time. I feel like he’s missing out on a great art form. I feel for the youth, overwhelmed by content and dopamine

Movies are a dead medium, let him enjoy the Tik Toks

I've been reading through Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan books & I knew they'd be stupid but they are super loving stupid. Starts off pretty normal rah-rah America Cold War stuff & then you get to the Cold War ending and poor Tom is clearly lost. Spoilers for 30 year old books that aren't exactly literature: First some East Germans & Red Army Faction people link up with Hezbollah-aligned terrorists in Syria & end up blowing a nuke up at the Super Bowl in Denver, and then in the next book Japan does a new economic Pearl Harbour & it also turns out has developed nukes. Meanwhile Jack Ryan gets made Vice President after the previous one resigns & a disgruntled Japanese pilot flies his 747 into the Capitol Building were a joint session of Congress verifies the new VP. Somehow Jack isn't in the room but almost all cabinet members (I think 2 survive), the President, all the Supreme Court Justices & almost all congressmen & senators are dead. Meanwhile there's some sub-plot where the previous VP who was forced to resign over sexual improprieties seems to plotting a run at the top job, & Iran & India seem to be plotting with China to do something, & there's also a further sub-plot around Ebola in Africa which I'm sure will end up with an attempt bio attack on America that Jack manages to thwart somehow

It's absolutely insane, it's not particularly well written, but shamefully I am shovelling the trash into me at a rate of knots.

I gave up after The Bear and the Dragon, I thought his stories were getting batshit and racist and I still can't quite believe some of the crazy poo poo I've read happened in the books after that, including (from memory):

A secret Muslim Super-Spy does a years-long undercover mission to get close enough to the President to murder him, but then the President tosses him a football to test his suspicions and the super-spy goes,"By Allah no, I have touched the unclean skin of a pig and must go to Mecca to be cleansed! :gonk:" so they arrest him.

A super cool hit squad of cool American super spies decide to go around the world literally murdering people they don't like. They get caught and go on trial but then smugly produce a pardon from former President Jack Ryan, who it turns out set up the cool assassination squad before he left office and wrote them a stack of blank pardons they can use whenever they want to commit a murder. This is applauded as a good thing.

lol I know it's called a pigskin but American footballs are made from cow leather

Clancy is such a hack & it's terrifying that he had an influence on the views of actual adults, but as someone who is firm in his left-wing politics I just find it hilarious how insane it is. And seriously, Japan & China allying up to do a war with Russia. That's about as likely as Israel & Syria allying up.

We began closing on the sale of our old house this week so yesterday was spent cleaning out the garage and lugging around heavy poo poo like these two giant cast iron sinks we bought a couple years ago but never did anything with. Last night was Drag Race and Taco Bell and today is for doing nothing.

Though “nothing” is relative - I’m a couch potato watching GCW’s twitch streaming (which somehow just airs other indie wrestling shows like CZW and PWG) while working on my Discogs-but-for-VHS-tapes website. Using my brains instead of my body today.

Cry 'Mayhem!' and let slip the dogs of Wardlow.
I just got my car back from the mechanic. The alternator died back in January or somethin' and it'd been screeching when I started it up ever since. I brought it back to the place that replaced the alternator and they replaced the belt tensioner for free, but the problem persisted. So I brought it to this guy nearer my house who opened it up and burst out laughing cause the other place had replaced some bracket that has no reason to ever go bad. They had put on the new alternator and new belt tensioner but never actually bothered to tighten the belt. So that's what was making the noise. He fixed it in like five minutes and said "I'm not gonna charge you for that, that laugh I got was worth it." So now I've got a new mechanic at least.

Not gonna be doing anything else really this weekend. My wife started a new medicine so she doesn't wanna go anywhere in case it makes her sick. I don't wanna go anywhere cause there's no where I wanna go so I'm gonna be staying home and watching wrestling and playing Balatro and Touhou (I just like the gameplay)
