The West this season was really a tale of haves and have-nots. You have eight teams with 98+ points and then it quickly goes down. Two teams around 90 pts; three teams around 80 points; and then three teams under 60 points, with the Sharks having one of the worst modern seasons.

Usually you would have a gradual drop from 110ish to 70ish, but this season saw a major dichotomy.

The West is all good, but maybe not all great, imo. The east has the Caps and Islanders sneaking in but the other six teams are elite, I'd say. Should be a fun year!

Thats what I love most about the NHL playoffs. Someone always gets Halak'd or Oilers it up.

e: Boston with their record setting season losing to the 8th seed Panthers last year for example, ruled.

So what happens to the Coyotes name/history/etc. if more than 5 years goes by? Obviously Meruelo is likely going to take his $1B and run, but if another billionaire someday wants to try hockey in AZ again, and gets NHL approval, would they be eligible to re-use the Coyotes name/etc?

I'm assuming they could, but it would probably be as a true, new franchise named Coyotes instead of having the history/etc., similar to the Jets.

Friedman said he doesn't know on today's 32 Thoughts so I think that part isn't out there yet. I'd guess it reverts to the NHL.

I also don't think Meruelo would have negotiated this if he really planned to give up and not use that $1B to finance an arena, the question is more about whether he fucks it up along the way and how long it takes.

Was extremely funny how 2023 Rielly had the leafs' worst +/- in the regular season and their best +/- in the playoffs, i too believe in Minus Morgan

I have to assume part of it is just him rationing shits to give as he gets played way more than anyone else, hopefully it's left him with enough in the tank. Those six D don't combine for anything close to 60 minutes so the moment something goes wrong Keefe is probably going to double shift him and McCabe until they die

Both the Avalanche and the Jets will be missing a 19 goal scorer going into the first round. Drouin is hurt and won't be available for the Avalanche.

For the Jets, Cole Perfetti is in perfectly good health, but Bowness would rather play a 3 goal scorer who plays the right way than some 19 goal fancy boy

That's what I've thought too, but then I also saw an interview where Meruelo said he basically had no choice, because the NHL came to him in March and basically told him the team needed to be relocated because of their current conditions, so instead of dragging it all out, he got $1B with the inactivation options, but I feel like if the NHL had really wanted to try and push him to truly get the arena and re-activate, they'd have made him pay back some of the $1B he got (though he'd probably then just proceed with dragging it all out).

I mean, if he can actually buy the land and get the district set up like he proposed, it actually has the opportunity to be a windfall for him, if only because there are numerous events up in that area each year that draw in a lot of people and he'd fill out the hotel rooms for (the Barrett Jackson car auction, the Phoenix Open, and Spring Training is about 10 minutes away via Loop-101 that he wants to built along (Salt River Fields), plus multiple casinos near that.

But given that he couldn't even show up for the Coyotes last game on Wednesday, not holding out much hope for his actual interest.

According to this Friedman article, Meruelo has to return the $1 billion when/if he wants to reactivate the Coyotes for his new arena: https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/how-the-nhl-moved-the-arizona-coyotes-to-salt-lake-city/

Yeah, he does have to pay back the $1B to get the team again. And there's no question the NHL was sick of this poo poo and him keeping the team was no longer an option. What I mean is that if the NHL really had all the leverage in this situation and Meruelo was perfectly happy to be rid of the team for above market value, then the NHL would have paid him $1B to gently caress off forever. The presence of the reactivation clause at all says that Meruelo still wants to be part of the club.

But even though he has to pay back the $1B to get the team, he can use that money now to get the arena built and he can include minority partners in that, so that's not nothing. I just think the most likely outcome is losing the auction and the second most likely outcome is the city telling him to gently caress off when he tries to build the Meruelo Entertainment District.
