Greece and Spain under pressure to provide Ukraine with air defence systems

EU leaders urge Athens and Madrid to donate shipment as Kyiv’s need is greater than theirs

quote:

Greece and Spain are under intense pressure from their EU and Nato allies to provide more air defence systems to Ukraine, as Kyiv prepares to demand more aid at a meeting of EU foreign and defence ministers on Monday.

Kyiv this month made an urgent plea to western allies for seven additional air defence systems, such as US-made Patriots or Soviet-developed S-300s, as Russia steps up an air and missile campaign against the country’s cities and power infrastructure.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X on Sunday: “Patriots can only be called air defence systems if they work and save lives rather than standing immobile somewhere in storage bases.”

Only Germany has announced a shipment, of one Patriot system.

Other EU leaders used a summit in Brussels last week to personally urge Spanish and Greek prime ministers Pedro Sánchez and Kyriakos Mitsotakis to donate some of their systems to Ukraine, according to people briefed on the discussions.

The two leaders, whose armed forces possess between them more than a dozen Patriot systems plus others such as S-300s, were told their need was not as great as Ukraine’s and that they did not face any imminent threat.

“We all know who has them, we all know where they are, and we all know who really needs them,” said one of the people.

Officials said less pressure was being put on Poland and Romania, which also have Patriots, to consider shipments to Kyiv given their more vulnerable location on the border with Ukraine.

[....]

The pressure to donate systems will intensify at a meeting of foreign and defence ministers of the EU’s 27 member states in Luxembourg on Monday, officials said. Kyiv is understood to be particularly interested in Greece’s ageing S-300 systems, which Ukrainian forces already have in their arsenal and are experienced with.

“There are countries who are not in an immediate need of their air defence systems, to be very honest,” said one EU diplomat involved in the preparations for the meeting. “Each country is being asked to decide what it can spare.”

The defence ministries of Greece and Spain declined to comment when contacted by the Financial Times. Sánchez said after meeting Zelenskyy last month that Spain would “deliver new capabilities in 2024 to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression”.

Nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday that he expected new pledges of air defence supplies “will be announced soon” but did not provide any details of the countries or weaponry involved.

Nato has conducted an audit of the air defence capabilities its member states possess and where they are deployed, Stoltenberg said, adding that “this mapping confirms that there are systems including Patriot systems available to be provided to Ukraine”.

EU leaders urge Athens and Madrid to donate shipment as Kyiv’s need is greater than theirs

EU ministers fail to pledge Patriot systems to Ukraine at key meeting

European ministers said on Monday they were looking urgently at how to provide more air defence to Ukraine but they stopped short of concrete pledges of the Patriot systems that Kyiv values most, Retuers reports.

Officials say it is hard for countries to part with Patriots as they are an integral part of national defences.

Ukrainian officials have countered that the risk of EU countries coming under air attack is extremely low, while Ukraine faces such attacks frequently.

Spanish foreign minister Jose Manuel Albares said: “We are well aware of Ukraine’s need for air defence, and especially Patriots and Spain has always done whatever it could.”

He added: “Since it is a real war, I’m not really a friend of the idea of disclosing too much about what we give, when and from where.”

I’ve written books on a variety of themes and set within many historical eras, always concentrating on young people plunged in a time of war and persecution. Because Ukraine’s history has been subjected to much disinformation and distortion by both Russia and the former Soviet Union, I’ve written a lot of Ukrainian-themed historically accurate books. If you want to understand the Russian war against Ukraine, inform yourself about the treatment of Ukrainians by both Stalin and Hitler. Putin is channeling them both.

Traitors Among Us

Originally from Ukraine, Maria and her older sister Krystia have made it through separate ordeals during World War II and are now back together again. They cannot believe their luck: Hitler is dead, and the war has ended.

And yet, they are not as safe as they thought. As the sisters settle into their shared bunk with other exhausted refugees in the Displaced Persons camp, a familiar girl steps through the door, claiming to be Bianka, a Polish forced laborer who worked on a farm with Maria during the war.

Maria is outraged. This girl is not Bianka, but Sophie Huber, an enthusiastic member of the League of German Girls. She’s a Hitler Girl.

Before Maria can turn her in, Sophie claims that Krystia and Maria are Nazis, and the Soviet soldiers don’t seem to be terribly particular about whom they’re taking. The girls are taken away, now in a danger they never imagined. Will they be able to prove their innocence?

quote:

Making Bombs for Hitler

In this companion book to the award-winning Stolen Child, a young girl is forced into slave labour in a munitions factory in Nazi Germany. In Stolen Child, Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch introduced readers to Larissa, a victim of Hitler’s largely unknown Lebensborn program. In this companion novel, readers will learn the fate of Lida, her sister, who was also kidnapped by the Germans and forced into slave labour — an Ostarbeiter.

In addition to her other tasks, Lida’s small hands make her the perfect candidate to handle delicate munitions work, so she is sent to a factory that makes bombs. The gruelling work and conditions leave her severely malnourished and emotionally traumatized, but overriding all of this is her concern and determination to find out what happened to her vulnerable younger sister.

With rumours of the Allies turning the tide in the war, Lida and her friends conspire to sabotage the bombs to help block the Nazis’ war effort. When her work camp is finally liberated, she is able to begin her search to learn the fate of her sister.
In this exceptional novel Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch delivers a powerful story of hope and courage in the face of incredible odds.

I do also want to note that that Winterkill book about the Holodomor was published about two weeks before Russia's invasion, so she's been publishing all this stuff about Ukraine even before the balloon went up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but much of the actual equipment from the new aid package is the long range weapons systems and air defense, right?

If so, it lays out what the strategy is in 2024 - hold the lines however you can while making periodic strikes on Russian territory and the Black Sea Fleet

You could generously interpret this strategy as "we are holding the line while we build up manpower and equipment - we can take the offensive in 2025 when we're ready"

More realistic, it's "hold on for dear life and deal just enough damage to Russian infrastructure and military assets that NATO still thinks this is a worthwhile investment"

Rather than victory, Zelensky's government now seems focused on just keeping the money train going as long as possible. It's the only way to stay in power.
