Yesterday was my first time seeing an osprey fish, I didn't know they hovered like that but it was cool as hell

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

Crossposting from the general bird watching thread in GO:

My mom has fairly covered the back yard with feeders and likes to look at robins and cardinals when they come by to eat. I'm looking into getting a bird feeder with a camera for Mother's Day, something like this. Has anyone used one before, any recommendations or general tips/tricks for getting quality Bird Shots?

Those feeder cameras are fun and good for seeing who is coming to your feeders and getting clips and screen grabs as a record, but they are not gonna get you quality bird shots, depending on how you define quality..

If you want what I consider quality bird shots from your garden you need a decentish camera with at least a 200mm lens and then setup a little place outside in your garden where you sit quietly and/or partially hidden with a tripod and the sun behind you then set up some natural looking perches near your feeders for the birds to stage visits to the feeders on and photograph them on those perches. Take care the background is as natural looking as you can make it. All of this obviously is determined by your garden configuration.

The main factors for the shot quality will be

No "on feeder" shots or shots with feeders visible (you can crop them out if they are far enough away.)
Natural looking clean perches.
Perches set at eye level with you so you are not shooting up or down on the subject too much.
Don't shoot through windows.
Background far enough away that it blurs out and looks natural.

Not saying you can't make other things work, but this is the sort of basic standard for a quality bird shots.

I have a Bird Buddy and while it's very cute and exciting to see the birds in my garden, the pictures can't generally be described as Good. But to maximise the potential goodness of feeder photos, I think make sure it's on a solid foundation(mine is hanging, so pictures can be a bit blurry if it's set to swinging by the birds coming and going) and set it up where it'll be catching as much sunlight as possible on the birds but not on the canera sensor itself.
