What did you think of the Helwani interview?

Honestly? I thought it was an interesting, and obviously self-serving, perspective on where his career is at this point. I could see what he was trying to put forward, and also see that he was trying to move on (both by minimising his culpability in problems and responsibilities in how they played out). He struck me as someone who was trying to move on, professionally. What also struck me, from what he said and what we're able to see from the outside, is that AEW has serious problems, that aren't being addressed.

I'm a fan of both AEW and WWE, and have spent a stupid amount of money watching their events. My main concern is that I agree with his point, which (as if on cue) the podcast just addressed right as I'm listening to them. They just had an almost laughing reaction to the idea that AEW was just trying to have high rated matches, rather than making money. They then said he was just being mean to TK and then started defending him. The entire point of the business is to continue the business. If the athletes kill themselves they'll spike the star ratings for a match, but it isn't sustainable. I listen to people like Foley and it's not hard to comprehend - this is what happened to innumerable promotions like ECW.

While I want to love AEW (and really enjoyed dynamite this week) this poo poo just seems pathetically childish and counterproductive. The product is at its best when it's focusing on its own strengths, and not falling into the same old traps.

Although I wish Mercedes was wrestling, I gotta say they did an incredible job last night building up her vs Willow.

She's justifiably angry about the injury and blames Willow. Willow, because she is a pure and perfect human, still feels bad about the injury and wants a title reign that's not tainted by that, plus she wants to beat Mercedes at 100%.

Then you've got a third party (presumably) mucking around in the background to escalate tensions between the two.

Super fun stuff elevated by how great Willow, Stat, and Stokely are as an act.

One thing that really helped was that Mercedes is clearly finding that next level I know I was hoping she would reach. She has focus and real emotion to tap into, and being forced to go toe-to-toe with Willow and Stokely, who are both super charismatic and in Stoke's case a master improviser, seemed to really make something click just like it did with Copeland before. She still needs some reps, but the charisma and energy present in that segment all around is really working for me, and by refocusing the story around their personal beef and signposting an obvious Mercedes turn they've really started something here. I'm excited! And I'm also excited that both women's belts have really cool stories going with great matches on the horizon! Lots of moving parts right now which is always a good thing for a wrestling company to have.

Mercedes felt way more confident and comfortable, I think the character shift towards being a bit more conniving and pissed off really helped.

Related; it's WILD to see how much Jack Perry improved as a promo in his time away. Infinitely more confident and the timing of his smug smile was perfect. Really fun to see him improve by leaps and bounds in such a short time.

Jack Perry was a revelation last night. Someone said it felt like he got five years of experience in eight months and it's absolutely true. He feels like a completely different wrestler - and I thought he did amazing work during the Christian feud and was really enjoying his Hook feud as well. He really has hit that next level and it's awesome to see.

He's also a young attractive bad boy and if AEW needs to do one thing right now it's court the female demographic that went wild for JungleHook and I'm dead serious

The idea of Stokely associating with Mercedes fills me with glee, even though I already love the dynamic he has going with Statlander and Willow. That was me. I said that.

I think the seeds were always there. There was always a smarmy little poo poo in there somewhere. I was on board with his heel turn when he turned on Hook, and you could tell there was potential. But his heel character was basically "be angry."

Idk what the hell they did to him in Japan but holy poo poo. I literally never cared about Jack Perry before, but now I can see why Tony views him as a pillar. Idk if it's one of those things where TK is a visionary and knew all along, or if he just kinda lucked into it, but I don't care.

It's wild that wrestling is the only entertainment where some people are more concerned about the economics of it than the show being presented to them.

When I left the theater after seeing Godzilla Minus One I wasn't complaining about the fact that it might not appeal casual movie fans or desperately refreshing GodzillaTix's twitter account to see how many tickets had been sold and comparing it to the sales for Godzilla vs Kong.

The core conceit of Punk's premise (they're not serious people running a business) is dispelled multiple times in the podcast and is also an outdated view of how BOTH companies make their money now. WWE could not sell a single ticket to their shows and they'd still be making money because the majority of their money comes from business deals with networks and Saudi Arabia. Likewise, they could sell out every show and not have enough to pay for their roster if they didn't have those B2B deals. It's the exact same with AEW. The money isn't in increasing ticket sales, it's in the next media rights deal with WBD AND PPV buys which have grown consistently even while the amount of PPVs themself has increased.

AEW seems to be making a distinct effort to make their midcard titles feel much more import.

Continental title is on Okada, TBS title is wrapped up with Mone, Ospreay is going for the International title, Tag titles are now on the main heels of the company. Hopefully BCG can make the trios belts feel big soon. Even the FTW belt is going to be more present.

I think it's cool.

I didn’t think about it until another poster mentioned it, but I wonder what this all means for Chuck going forward. He can’t beat Trent at this point, so then what? IS this just writing him off? Chuck as a singles guy feels so weird after so long as a tag guy in a way that it doesn’t feel weird for Trent for some reason. Maybe Trent will beat him so bad he’ll be convinced to also become bad.

I think it's cool.

I think what we're seeing is a concentrated effort to get the championships that aren't just the World Championship feeling big enough to sell a PPV. They did this with All Out and WrestleDream last year, and it's a smart move that makes all the divisions feel competitive.

The World Championship should feel the most important, certainly, and if I have one big complaint about last night's show it's that I would have swapped Swerve/Fletcher and Mox/Hobbs's placements on the card (and slightly rewritten the Callis segments dependent on that) but I'm not going to declare Swerve's win a wash already when we know he's gonna get a lot of focus next week and it was a very packed show. Just a minor misstep.

But yeah, I think it's only a good thing when your champion lineup could be Swerve, Okada, Ospreay, Edge, The Young Bucks, Bullet Club Gold (lead by Jay White), Willow Nightingale, Toni Storm, and Chris Jericho.

Like, that's an unbelievable amount of talent and it isn't even starting to scratch the surface of how deep this roster is. The party gauntlet last night showed us just how wild things could get with how many people have history with Ospreay, and how at any time they can send out multiple cool luchadors to do insane poo poo to giant dudes and put them through tables. It's lovely.
