Is dual wielding worth it? It felt like the halved attack on the second weapon resulted in neglible damage on most tough enemies, so I never used it ot anyone except Erik, since he gets the skill for full attack with the second weapon. Two-handed weapons generally felt more powerful.

Actually, now that I'm basically done with the game it feels like a good time to find out what's considered good skills/line-ups.
I mostly used sword/shield on the Hero. Briefly switched to two-handers in Act 2, after getting a party member that actually had shield skills, but switched back once i realized the sword of light was one-handed. The fact that the ultimate skills for one-handed swords hit ALL enemies, while the ultimate skills for two-handed swords only hit a group made the one-handed swords feel more useful, even though the damage is a bit less.
Erik started with a dagger, so I stuck with that, eventually adding dual wielding. His damage seemed to fall short in the late game, due to the lack of skills that boost dagger attacks. The 6x damage on enemies with statuses is huge, but bosses rarely felt vulnerable to that.
Didn't even consider whips for Veronica, she seemed like a pure spellcaster.
Serena switched to spears pretty quickly, since I felt like she needed to do useful amounts of damage when I didn't need healing. Eventually switched back to wands in the late game, when I actually used her for healing.
Sylvando seemed like an obvious candidate for whips, since i already had people with swords and daggers. Generally felt like more useful for utility than damage.
Jade ended up with claws, since I already had a spear user.
Rab stuck with heavy wands, since those boosted both his healing and his damage. Primarily used him as a healer for bosses, and as damage for regular enemies. Kinda found his single-target damage to be lacking, since it felt like most bosses had big dark resistance.
Hendrik starts with a two-handed sword, but the combination of actually having shield skills and immediately having a big scene where recieves an heirloom shield made me switch him to sword/shield (while switching the Hero to two-handers). Switched him back to two-handed swords when I switched the Hero back to one-handed.

Line-up-wise, I switched Veronica for Sylvando after I got him, and substituted both him and Serena for Jade and Rab after Octagonia. Rab seemed like the earliest source for party-wide healing with Right as Rain (I hadn't focused Sylvando's skills towards Hustle dance), and then he stuck around forever due to being a combination of offensive spells and healing. Erik and Jade covered physical damage prett well, although neither of them added much more than that.
I mostly stuck with this line-up after that. In act 2, Hendrik replaced Erik as my main physical damage dealer. When I eventually tried Erik again, his damage felt underwhelming in comparison. Jade stuck around until the Trial of the Luminary and Calasmos, when I felt like I needed two dedicated healers to stay alive.

jesus that was a lot of words I just typed

I didn't use much of a strategy either. I went with whichever weapons looked the most fitting for the character.

I used greatswords for 95% of the game and then swapped to sword and shield for the last 5%. It gave me better all-target damage but probably worse single-target and group damage

As far as I can tell, dual wielding gives you an extra BASIC attack whenever you use an offensive move, at 70% strength. I'm pretty confident that greatswords still outdamage that at most points.

I used axes on Hendrik and never regretted it. Gyrfalcon slash is cool and all but Parallaxe is nearly as good and axes have better abilities otherwise. I also think people underestimate his greatsword because he doesnt get swordmastery. 95% of the greatsword skills i used with the hero was helichopter, cutting edge and unbridled blade, which he also gets.

You can get some sweet combo damage out of Erik. Like top tier single target damage but it requires a few turns to set up.

The thing about Erik is he has no alternative to dual-wielding. You either dual wield or your off-hand is useless. All the other dual-wielders can use shields or two-hand a weapon.

I'm not actually sure what benefit serena gets from dual-wielding now that i think of it

I wish Veronica, Serena and Sylvando could dual wield whips. Also Veronica could dual wield staves.

Dragon quest 11 is a nearly perfect game except that Greatswords are completely overshadowed by dual wielding at the end cuz of plot mcguffins.

Should have been able to dual wield Greatswords.

In addition to doubling up on useful effects, both wands also contribute their full values to Serena's magic stats, in case you really need her spells to have that little bit of extra 'oomph'.

Wrt builds, I feel like character build viability, and even characters themselves, fluctuate during the course of the game. Rab starts off amazing because he gets solid offense and support, gets Fullheal earlier than everyone else, and Pearly Gates just tears apart a lot of Act 2 randoms, but he eventually falls off somewhat because he never gets, like, worse, but he never gets better either. Same thing with skill trees, great swords are fantastic early because you get crowd control and big damage, but great swords cap out at hitting one group of enemies or hitting one guy super hard and the game decides to neglect 2H swords completely on Hero when he gets a bunch of “hit everything onscreen” moves, his endgame shield giving MP regen and a lot of defense. Just as a few examples.

I feel like it's fine for greatswords to fall off towards the end when they're better for the entirety of the main game and probably most of the postgame too

I do wish there was a super sword of shadows you could make though

I don't think Oomph is affected by the caster's magic stat :v:

Highly likely we'll hear about Dragon Quest 3 HD soon. At the very least, we know it's coming to multiple platforms including PS4, PS5 and PC alongside Switch with this tweet.

The tagline says “The Legacy Begins”, so I’m guessing they’re gonna give the HD treatment to 1 and 2 as well?

It honestly wouldn't surprise me too much. 1 and 2 are pretty short games and reuse a lot of dungeon and overworld assets that are in 3. It kinda makes sense to just bundle the first three games together in HD. It's not like the Zenethia trilogy, where each game is big enough on its own to warrant standalone releases.

The game is literally the start of the Erdrick trilogy. I doubt they’re thinking about the other games until this one comes it and does well.

If this was a release of the first 3 games they'd be advertising dq1 or all 3 games. They may do 1 and 2 later in the same style but I wouldn't expect it here.

Funny thing, I got stuck in 2 as a kid because of the tile set. I played 3 first (because kid logic meant that 3 must be better than 2) and in that game the bush tile is unwalkable. But there's a part in 2 where you need to walk into an area filled with that tile to pick up one of the crests and I couldn't figure out how to do it because I assumed it was unwalkable because of 3.

I HAVE BEEN A VERY NAUGHTY BOY

Man a lot of people seem convinced this is a trilogy of Dragon Quest 1-3 in the 2D remake style off that trailer instead of just DQ3

Seems like "The legacy begins" should be clear it's just 3 but I guess a lot of people forget that entry is the first chronologically or something

I really do wish it was all three though that would whip rear end

I saw a clip of Yuji Hori making some brief remarks about a remake of 1 and 2. It came from a Japanese livestream. From the sounds of it , it seemed like a sort of "if this one does well" type of idea. The host then shushed him and said he probably shouldn't talk about that.

Well, until we have games announced, you should probably take their existence with a pile of salt, if not the whole drat shaker. Hori might want to do remakes of the whole Erdrick trilogy, just like he's claimed to want to do a remake of DQ9 before IIRC, but there's a lot of extenuating circumstances that could prevent the project from getting the greenlight.
