even though i enjoyed the demo, i can't pull the trigger at full price for stellar blade. i decided that if this game is getting compared to sekiro and nier, which are both supposed to be S tier games that i happen to own and have only dabbled in either, i might as well play those first and wait for stellar blade to go on sale.

so ok i restarted sekiro tonight and played for a bit expecting it to be challenging but not ridiculous, but im finding it way more ridiculous than satisfying. i feel like i am definitely doing something wrong at pretty much every step of the way somehow.

i got up to this ogre thing that breaks out of some chains and it just has a massive health pool that is a slog to get through, but oh apparently i need a fire weapon from the guy back at the shack? ok fine lemme backtrack, but also i have this bell that lets me go to the past? let's see what this is all about. oh there's another impenetrable mini boss that i need a weapon art to block thrust attacks? great lemme buy that thing, oh now it's relatively easy. now i'm up against a guy who drinks poison and is surrounded by fire and 800 fodder enemies and he one shots me if i miss a single parry as i try to just learn the rhythm? cool.

also, i stumbled upon a back route that originally let me bypass the spear thrust mini boss and unlock a new bonfire or whatever but i'm too stubborn to not go the normal route anyway, but it feels a little weird and gamebreaky/janky? just a really weird experience so far that doesn't feel like a regular curve to progression that i was expecting. i'll keep at it though, but it's strange that i've seen so many complaints about a game like doom eternal with prescribed ways to kill enemies but my experience with sekiro so far is that there are pretty solid progression blocks without hyper specific items/abilities.

Sounds like you're doing fine? If you're loving around in Hirata that place is a bit higher of a difficulty curve than the main story route at that point in the game, but if you've figured out how to Mikiri then I'd say you're doing better than many others often do. Sekiro is all about leveling up in the brain. Hesitation is defeat.

...is anyone playing Megaton Musashi??? It's Level 5's mech game that came out in JP a few years ago and finally got an NA release a few days ago with this new, expanded Wired edition. Seems like it sadly released with almost no marketing, and it's a really good game so far! I was expecting to enjoy the mech building/fighting/customizing, but I had no idea the game also had a pretty in depth story and rpg elements like an explorable city with lots of npcs to talk to and findable items.

I'm only like 2 hours in and I've done like one mission so far cuz I've been busy running around talking to everyone. The combat is fast and arcadey and the loot system seems pretty extensive. I hope the game gets some good word of mouth cuz right now it seems way under everyone's radar.

One tip I have for Sekiro and especially big bosses like the ogre is that way more attacks are parryable than you think. In fact all the attacks other than grabs for the ogre are parryable even if they look meaty and aren't traditional strikes. The danger pop-up is pretty legit guide.

Once you get that you can stay on top of him and finish him quickly.

Also alot of mini bosses like the ogre can have their first life stealth killed. Like you can just backtrack after triggering him and get an easy backstab.

When we were having the last Eternal discussion I was thinking about how Sekiro is like the ideal of that style because you only have to remember a few things for all enemies instead of several for each enemy. “Get good at parrying” is 90% of it, you can parry any attack that doesn’t have the red symbol on top, and then red symbol attacks are mostly about looking at the enemy’s body language to figure out which kind of attack it’s gonna be out of three (grab/thrust/sweep) and then doing the appropriate counter (dodge/mikiri/jump). And actually I think you can still party thrusts? But mikiris are easier and better, you have a point about that being an essential skill but it’s a very early skill and also, importantly, it’s like the coolest move in any video game ever

You can deflect thrusts but not block them so it's infinitely safer to use a Mikiri counter, yeah. I've practiced on the last boss so much I just got used to parrying his thrusts but otherwise I will always go for a Mikiri.

You don't need anything to defeat it but it can help. If you're finding he has too much HP, you're probably not being aggressive enough. The only attacks to watch out for are the grabs which always seemed inconsistent to me.

Level 5 seemingly wants that game to fail since they've barely marketed it, unfortunately it's also £58 on the store and no cheaper physical copy so I'll wait for a sale.
