Kristi Noem didn’t just kill her VP shot, there’s no way she will ever win another open election again. She was already term-limited as SD Governor, and like DeSantis her mindset was clearly up-or-out. The next election she’d have to compete in is the 2026 midterm, but I doubt she’ll attempt to run for any office.

I would have loved to be a fly in the room as the first article was published. Even in the crazy campaigns of 2024, there’s no way this story doesn’t kill any political strategy you had.

I grew up on a farm, and I'd say it instilled more reasons not to pull this kind of poo poo. Where rural/western specific media touched this kind of stuff, it lionized the rancher who took care of their herd in dangerous weather at personal risk. Conversely, I distinctly remember repeat performances of a epic poem (in the sense that it took about 15 minutes to perform orally) at trail rides, etc., regarding the ostracization of a cowboy shooting a horse that continuously bested him.

Outside of all the normal attachment to animals (and you can grow to appreciate an individual cow while also acknowledging someone is going to eat it someday), each animal is also an economic investment. You can't just go out an shoot an animal without throwing away money.

While there were kids who talked about going out shooting stray cats, my memory is they were the maladjusted kids who'd get a bit of side-eye. What you do have rurally is more access to to guns and animals, so your regularly occurring psychopaths have access to do something Iike this. For Noem specificly, it reads to me as the intersection of psychopath, access, and wealth.

As far as I can tell, she sold off her stake in the family businesses in 2016 or so, though she kept some of the land she inherited.

Nobody's really bothered to investigate Kristi's "ranch", but some old hands in local politics reporting have cast some doubt on it:

https://listen.sdpb.org/2022-08-04/hold-on-to-your-hat-for-a-wild-ride-in-governors-race

quote:

The timing of “our ranch was saved” and the beautiful visuals leave the impression that she was riding on the one that was saved. She wasn’t. I don’t know where she was, but it wasn’t on the Noem place near Castlewood.

I’ve been there. The Noems have an attractive, modern home on a fetching old farmstead with a nice, East-River-type pasture nearby. Good grass in that pasture when I was there for a profile on Noem late in 2010. But nothing there said “ranch” to me. She used to call it a farm, and sometimes a ranch, but lately has settled on ranch.

I guess it fits better with the image she wants to project these days.

What I can tell you for sure is there’s nothing around Noem’s place like the sweeping grasslands in the ad. I’d like to know where it was filmed. So I sent an email to Noem’s campaign staff. I received the same response that I got earlier when I sent the campaign an email asking who made the ad. None.

I’m beginning to think outreaches from me to the campaign this cycle will be underappreciated.

The ad it's talking about is this one:
https://twitter.com/KristiNoem/status/1542148626616664070

Moreover, in a 2022 profile in Elysian magazine called her a "former rancher" with no apparent pushback from her.

She's been caught lying about her farming history on the campaign trail before, and she's someone who bought a horse just to use it for campaign appearances, so it wouldn't be shocking if she was keeping a couple of animals for fun and exaggerating it into a "ranch" for campaign purposes, or spending some time hanging out at her siblings' ranches for fun. It's not like there's anyone to run a ranch these days; she's busy with her political career, her husband is busy running an insurance company, and she's been caught pulling enough nepotism strings to get jobs for her kids that we know the kids probably aren't doing too much ranching either.

I don't think she can realistically be appointed to any public facing position either, at least for a few years. Anyone who appoints her is going to get a ton of side eye for appointing the dog murderer. Best bet is that she gets involved with lobbying somehow, unless Fox can figure out a way to spin this and she can become a talking head.

Unfortunately she was a dud and sucked at the job. They would dunk on her constantly for being useless but it was with affection. She basically got downgraded to a pet.

Any normal person can find a place for a "useless" dog, whether it's finding proper training, a different job, downgrade to family pet, or find another home to take them in.

And if there's no choice but euthanize them, they'll find a vet.

And if they DO have to shoot an animal because it's in pain and going to die anyway, they'll use something besides a loving shotgun

And if they do have to shoot an animal, they make sure they have enough to do the job.

My spouse grew up on a far with some racist rear end Canadian hillbillies, and she was suitably horrified at the idea that you'd euthanize an animal without having extra rounds in the chamber or on your person. Let alone just start shooting healthy animals because they annoy you.

President Trump Signs Federal Animal Cruelty Bill Into Law

www.nytimes.com - Mon, 25 Nov 2019 posted:

The bill, called the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act, makes intentional acts of cruelty to animals federal crimes carrying penalties of up to seven years in prison.

“It is important that we combat these heinous and sadistic acts of cruelty, which are totally unacceptable in a civilized society,” Mr. Trump said at a signing ceremony on Monday, where he was joined by Mr. Buchanan and animal rights advocates.

State of the animals under the Trump administration: a year of highs and lows

www.humanesociety.org posted:

Among the positive actions taken for animals:

  • The Environmental Protection Agency announced plans to end all tests on mammals, including dogs, mice, and rabbits, by 2035. The agency will devote $4.25 million to the development of non-animal testing technologies at five universities.

  • The Bureau of Land Management agreed in 2019 to return to a 2014 policy designed to prevent horses from being funneled to slaughter by allowing individuals and organizations to buy only four wild horses over a six-month period. In 2018, the Trump administration had moved to allow 25 horses to be purchased at a time, with no time limit between purchases, making the animals vulnerable to mass purchases by “kill buyers.”

Under the Trump regime, there were no accounts of dogs biting White House visitors as there were under the Obama or Biden regimes. Nobody got sent upstate to live on a farm. Sure, people may make fun of the way he speaks about dogs, but actions are louder than words.

It's mostly just because he uses "like a dog" as an idiom for every negative thing in the world.

His ex-wife also wrote in her memoir decades ago that he hated her dog and hated dogs in general. He also said he wasn't getting a dog when he became President because he didn't want one.

There isn't really any evidence he hates pets in general more than other presidents, but he does specifically dislike dogs (publicly at least) more than other recent presidents.

One way to be a responsible dog owner is to realize when an environment is too chaotic, and you aren’t capable of being present and active enough in a dog’s life to guide them, to know you shouldn’t have a dog right now, or maybe even ever!

Deciding on keeping dogs around who are continuously biting people isn’t doing a good job of being a responsible dog owner. It’s ridiculous how bad of a dog owner Biden is, just on the standard that if you described a dog owner continually keeping dogs that keep biting people, nobody on earth would advise you to keep that status quo, unless politics get involved.

Without reading the memoir, that seems like it could be a little unreliable of an account for multiple reasons, and yeah it doesn't really show he hates pets in general. He does have multiple pictures in close contact with dogs, which he in no way had to do.

To be fair to Putin, he didn't get the dog to upset Merkel. He brought the dog to a meeting with Merkel and made her sit next to it to upset her.

He got the dog as a gift from a Russian general in the 90's and the Merkel incident was at least 15 years ago, so the dog is either dead or living in secret as the oldest dog in the world.
