I did the same thing, except it was another students retainer that he had dropped on the ground when we were grade 7. I didn't see it, walking along and CRUNCH, queue him asking almost at the same time "Hey, has anyone seen my retainer?"

I just stood there, pivoting on one foot for about a minute to hide my crime, until people had dispersed and I could reach down, pull the retainer from the bottom of my shoe, and discreetly pop it into his knapsack.

I was walking along, and felt something weird under my foot. I really wish I didn't go back to see what I had stepped on :smith:

The frog looked like a stomped on ketchup packet with a squirt of innards shooting out. :smith:

I feel like every kid has that one time they kill a small animal by accident and realize their horrific killing potential for things smaller than them. mine was visiting my grandma in florida when I was 7 and they had an absolute invasion of anoles everywhere. they're fast, and I wanted to catch one, and tried to put my foot in the way of one that was running away, with predictable results. I was inconsolable and to this day keep it in mind when handling animals and how fragile smaller ones are.

Learned that trick in news photography class in 1982. The instructor - a crusty old news guy named Merle Agnello - showed us a night shot he'd taken of a train wreck on a trestle bridge in the 50s by setting up his Speed-Graphic on a tripod about 100-yards away, using a very slow film and a high aperature to maximize the depth of field, then spent 20-minutes running around the area popping off a hand-held flash to 'paint' the scene with light. The second part of that trick was to not stop moving.

He was also a perv that loved demonstrating flash fixing an image on film by setting the camera slower than 1/30th of a second (it is difficult to get a clear image slower than 1/60 - you have to have very steady hands), then having the most well-endowed female come up to the front of the class, where they would face each other, both jump up & down, & he'd take a shot with the speedlight on max to stop the motion. We'd get to see the photo at the next class.

That's my boomer anecdote for today, chil'ren.
