One time when I was very tired, when in my early 20s, after watching a ton of American Dad I fell asleep. My mom woke me up, and my first response was "Where's Francine???" in a panic. The only other two shows I literally confused for reality are Passions and Fringe. The former was after waking again (I asked for Dr. Eve and Julian), and the latter was passing out during a blood test and thinking I was an abducted Fringe Agent when I woke up.

Also, another reason why the TBS era is somehow better than the Fox era is that it continually introduced new recurring characters and recurring jokes, instead of depending on old stuff. Dr. Ray, Bazooka Sharks, Morning Mimosa, etc. I think Billy and his creator (blanking on the name) are post-Fox too, though I might be wrong. A lot of long running shows don't take this initiative. I'm struggling to think of a single The Simpsons recurring character from after the Scully era. Maybe Chalmers' kid? Regardless, that show is getting really good lately, Francine. Still, the major argument defenders of the late season Simpsons episodes put up is "the show just got old, it happens" and AD's continued quality is a full throated refutation of that argument. However, no one gives a poo poo about American Dad. For whatever reason, no one cares about the show, ever.

I love that AD keeps the dysfunctional family stuff going, especially interspersed between the weirdly supportive episodes, it's so much funnier. Bob's burgers got a lot lamer when he stopped telling his family how terrible they were.

I think what makes it work is that there's no designated punching bag among the Smith's, pretty much every member is just as likely to be dealing out the abuse as they are to be receiving it
