Hey vinyl thread, I'm hoping y'all can give me some guidance. My mom gave me a record of her father doing an interview on the local radio in 1951, a month before he died in the Korean war. She wants me to get it digitized, which I assume would be best done by a professional, but the record looks pretty rough from fingerprints and age and whatever else. I know there are plenty of cleaning kits and techniques, but they're all for mass-produced records, and since this looks like it was made in the radio station and is so important, I really don't want to gently caress it up by using something that scratches it or accidently melts it because I don't know what I'm doing. I'm not above paying someone to clean it professionally, but before I take it to the local record store, does anyone know about this type of record, and if there's anything I need to keep in mind re: restoring it? I'm pretty lost and I just want to make sure I do it right.

That disc looks pretty moldy based on your pictures. I think this is something to work with a professional on since it’s in such rough shape and is of such importance to you. This is a presto disc, it runs at 78 rpm, and it plays from the inner groove out. https://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?t=111494 Hopefully this helps you get started. But yeah, you really should consult with someone who has done this because you care a lot about this. Cemetry Gator fucked around with this message at 03:08 on May 2, 2024 |

I probably would just try... Playing it . Using a 3 mil stylus at a low tracking force. I wouldn't try cleaning it myself though. Those lacquer-coated metal discs can flake apart pretty easily. Luckily yours seems to be in good shape that it should be playable all the way through.

Filling out Big Black with 2 EPs and 2 singles. Next Atomizer which I'll probably get when I go down to pick up the new Shellac album later this month. After that it's off to discogs for their interview EP and SOUND OF IMPACT if I can find someone who'll ship it to Australia for not ridiculous money. Please to enjoy an MP3 download

There is this little hole in the wall record store that I pass all the time and for whatever reason I have never gone in. Happened to drive by yesterday and he was having a $1 sidewalk sale so I stopped in and bought some soul 45's. I regretted not buying more. Went back today and he had changed it to 10 for $1 and all of the stuff I regretted not buying was still there. Haha. So now I have 100 45's to listen to. Nothing too crazy so far but a good stack of James Brown, some Philly soul, and Stax stuff. A lot of poo poo I just grabbed because the label looked cool.

It's the 16th anniversary of losing my dad, so I put on the album that helped get me through it, Atmosphere's When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That poo poo Gold. It features the song Yesterday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FJUD0rEPWM), which I usually only listen to on this day because of how heavy and relevant it is to me. Fantastic album all around, amazing production by Ant and storytelling/rapping by Slug. That album came out 2 weeks before my dad died and Yesterday is usually my only skip on the album because that song gets play usually only on this day. Anyway, about the actual physical record, the weirdest thing about the release I have is it's the 10 anniversary pressing from 2018, which features scratch-and-sniff labels on the record themselves. They give off a lemon scent. It's actually not bad, I listened to it today and before putting it on the player I gave it a smell and yeah, still lemony. I think it's a neat little gimmick, however I'm not sure how long scratch'n'sniff aspect of it will last. Apparently stickers like that can still give off the scent for decades? Either way, I'm into it.

Atmosphere helped me through a lot of garbage, God loves ugly and You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having especially, and tracks like the The Woman with the Tattooed Hands have a permanent place etched in my mind from having them endlessly on repeat. One of the first groups I went out of my way to get every vinyl from, wel, I tried. I even managed to get my hands on this, The Fun EP (Happy Clown Bad Dub Eight) which Discogs tells me isn't that rare but last couple times I looked I could never find the tracks on youtube or anywhere else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGKZ39tbEc0 Lucy Ford hit hard. I can also thank Atmosphere for being my gateway into indie hip hop.

I even managed to get my hands on this, Yeah, Yesterday is one of 2 songs that I felt were cosmically aligned to release when I needed them. The other is "Smahccked My Head Awf" by Hot Mulligan from their album Why Would I Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic9mzeSN-yQ, which is about lead singer Tades Sanville dealing with his grandmother's dementia. It came out in May of last year, and just a few months earlier in January my mom was diagnosed. I was really struggling with how I was supposed to feel, and just lost and angry and rude. That song put things in perspective. I can listen to it whenever I get frustrated with mom-related things and it re-centers me. My album of last year. Two songs that came out right when I needed them.

does anyone here listen to Black Moth Super Rainbow, and if so, did anyone buy a copy of Start a People? I only just found out they pressed it earlier this year, it's sold out everywhere, and I'm sad about it. I have a spare copy of Dandelion Gum on pink vinyl and would be keen to do a swap if that interests someone in the thread who has it?

This was in that big stack of 45's I'm currently going through. Pretty sure it is an acetate. I assumed they would just be someone covering the songs but although the sound quality is pretty poo poo they seem to be the original recordings. I would assume making these would cost more than going down and buying the 45 so why would someone put these songs on acetate? Was home acetate recording killing the record industry before tape came along?
|
# ? May 6, 2024 23:50 |
|
Lots of reasons for acetate for records that old it is probably a pressing master or a test cut before the master is cut. They are also used a lot for short run bootlegs or even those old school song booths. Looking at that record I would guess song booth or test cut. In my experience the master cut records for 45s are on 10 inch metal disks covered in acetate. You will also see them a lot in the reggae and early ska scene too.

SwimNurd posted:Lots of reasons for acetate for records that old it is probably a pressing master or a test cut before the master is cut. Yeah. I was expecting a songbooth record but I'm pretty sure it's The Platters on one side and Little Richard on the other. It's a 7" 45 so maybe it is just a weird bootleg master for jukeboxes? One of those "Double Hitter" records. I dunno. It's kinda neat but it sounds like poo poo and I doubt its worth anything so probably going in the discard pile. A friend of mine has been asking me to come over and take a look at a bunch of 7"s he acquired and I finally went to check it out. Probably about 1000 records. Tons of unsleeved of course. About 80% Easy Listening/Big Band stuff (Jackie Gleason and stuff like that) Then a random Ice T Colors or a Johnny Cash American 45 mixed in. Some stuff of note. A small stack of Spanish imports, Bruce Springsteen singles like this one https://www.discogs.com/release/4995226-Bruce-Springsteen-Im-On-Fire and Joe Jackson https://www.discogs.com/release/2813893-Joe-Jackson-Sale-Realmente-Ella-Con-El. A couple Wipers singles that he is definitely keeping and this box of Duke Records 45's (Maybe 150 or so) Also a poo poo ton of Epic records from all genres. There are some ok things scattered in but he's kinda looking to me for some advice. I told him to throw away or donate the unsleeved for sure. I really don't think that most of this collection is worth the effort to sell other than the few things I pointed out.
