Oh I see, yeah maybe one of those things to check out in person. Btw I dunno how fast this is gonna be a nationwide thing but it seems like Dick's are converting to just being an apparel store, I have to go pretty far to find one that actually sells all the stuff I'm used to seeing in there. I stopped by at basically every sporting goods store around here when I was looking at the kayak stuff and while REI seemed kinda nice everything was super expensive, I think my favorite ended up being Sportsman's Warehouse, so I'll probably just stop by there. I do wanna visit the bass pro shops pyramid some day though. Edit: Meanwhile I'm trying to make sense of the rules here, seems like quite a lot to keep in mind, I should probably have some kind of printed version of this with me right? or at least Pages 10 and 11. The best net to use is a Koi Sock Net. If a net can safely handle a 36" ornamental Goldfish it can handle a 12" bass. EDIT: They do come in all sorts of sizes. Desert Bus fucked around with this message at 15:49 on May 1, 2024 |

Brut posted:Hey quick question, why are fishing landing nets so expensive? is there a good reliable cheap one ya'll recommend? Feels like it should be under like $10 but maybe there's some reasoning behind it Generally what kind of net will depend on what kind of fishing. Bassing from a boat you’ll usually want something with a nice long handle, which will just get in the way if you’re in a kayak, and trout stream fly fisherman will use those super expensive wooden dip nets with the soft silicone netting so as to be gentle with c&r trout and because they’re easy to carry for a long day in the stream. On my kayak I use an aluminum thing with a short handle and rubber-coated netting I got at one of the big department places. E- pretty sure I bought this one with the shorter handle. I don’t remember it being $45 but it’s possible, or maybe prices have jumped that much in the last couple years. In any case I’d recommend spending the bit extra for a net with the rubber coating. Much easier on the fish that way. The raw nylon cords slice right through fins. https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/promar-premier-anglers-series-landing-net-20pmraprmnglr24hpfac/20pmraprmnglr24hpfac

The vast majority of the information in the fishing regulations for each state are around restrictions on keeping fish caught. If you have no immediate plans to try to keep whatever you catch, you can safely ignore a lot of what’s written there. The most important information there is the fishing season for each species. If you don’t know enough about different types of freshwater fish to know how someone could tell that you are specifically targeting that species, I’d say you can get started with inexpensive rod/reel combos, a bobber, light sinker, a size 8 or 6 hook, and hotdog pieces or something to put on the end. Panfish are usually year round in every state. If you somehow hook a largemouth bass or some other more regulated species while bobber fishing, the DNR aren’t going to pop out of the bushes and tackle you or anything. Just throw them back in the water and all is good.

I wish rock bass got bigger. They’re aggressive, thrive in accessible waterways, and fight well for their size. Cool fish.

The key thing with all of them is that they use a rubber mesh, which is better for the fish and less prone to getting hooks wrapped up and snagged in it vs nylon or whatever.

Yeah keeping the fish is exactly what I mean, I'd just need to know what a regulated species looks like, that's why I'm thinking best to have the document with me (and not in electronic form because pulling out my phone while a fish is flopping around sounds like a recipe for disaster). Wonder if I can integrate a measuring stick in to the boat, some kind of waterproof paint? idk. Still need to buy tackle, I'm tempted by these kits that seem to have a lot of different stuff for like 10 bucks but I have a feeling there's a lot in there I won't need, if there's a good starting tackle set you're aware of I'm open to suggestions.

Print the poo poo off and keep it in your box. You might be able to find a paper copy at tackle/sports shops too. Ontario used to widely distribute paper copies of hunting and fishing regs. They still give them out, but you can't find them at as many places these days.

Yeah, that PDF I linked seems pretty printable and that is the official source (no idea why they use "fishandboat.com" instead of a pa.gov subdomain), but come to think about it when I was at the state park office getting the launch permit there were a bunch of different flyers to grab there, I bet one of them was this thing, I should've looked closer.

I went on my first surf fishing trip of 2024 now that it's finally warmed up. People all around me were catching stripers left and right and of course I wasn't lol. I think it's because I was using lures and all those guys were probably throwing clams or bloodworms. I don't mind fishing with natural bait sometimes but I just like the more active type of fishing you do with lures. And I've had good luck with them plenty of times in the past. But yeah, I should probably just use what's working for the other folks...

Moving back to northern michigan after a few decades of military service and putting florida in the rearview. Cant wait to catch brookies on a wooly bugger and my 2wt noodly bamboo thats been in storage for years. I'll be about fifteen mins from the Pigeon and Sturgeon rivers plus a billion smaller creeks. Also super excited for September and my first salmon run in forever!

i picked up a 5.5 foot neon green lew's laser ultralight rod to pair with a shimano sienna 500 with some 6 lb hi vis line and it was really fun at a pond. got a white crappie and a couple bluegill on a little minnow crankbait, the first time I've gotten anything on one. had a couple other bites but couldn't get em fast enough. I see why people like ultralight stuff.

From the beginning, he has made it very clear that he has big aspirations for himself to be self-employed as a professional fisherman/angler. He is a big dreamer and he has a big heart, which is a lot of why I am drawn to him. However, he doesn't deal with failure well, and I am not sure how to support him during those moments.

I know there's lot of fishermen on YouTube but do any of them really have the audience to make a living from it?

Hey I have a question, I'm figuring out kayak crate/rod holder stuff and the ones I'm seeing online are basically this shape: , I was thinking if it was open a little in each direction at the bottom of the slot, the reel could naturally slide in there and the rod will be less likely to pop out on its own for whatever reason. Anyway, I had some old paintball pods so I took a knife and scissors to one of them just to see if it works and...kinda? See attachment. From what I've seen commercially sold rodholders (mostly track-attached) seem to have some kind of clasp above where the rod goes in to secure it. What do ya'll think about this? Do you think the upside down T would work okay? Should I go with that and a velcro strap? Wouldn't be too hard to glue one on.

looks kind of short but it's hard to eyeball from the picture the clasp bits on the rodholders are mostly for if you tip your kayak over

Nah that's not it, I'm saying when I lock it down and pull hard the line is spinning but the reel isn't, my understanding is that I should have either put some electrical tape around the reel first, or started with mono/fluro before tying it to the braid. Good chance I messed up the initial knot too. I'm thinking what my most hassle-free way to redo this (in a small space) would be, well, specifically the getting the line off the reel part.

How much line did you put on the spool and how loose did it go on? Or are you just pulling harder than the max drag? What's the reel?

If your spool has little rubber nubs on it to make it grippy then it's braid ready, but i will usually back my braid with 10 yards of cheap mono. Keep in mind that i suck at fishing though E: to unspool it, try breaking down your rod if it's a 2-section. Place the handle under your mattress, open the bail, and wind the line back onto the plastic spool it came on (or just pull it all off and throw it away, start fresh with new line if that's your preference) titties fucked around with this message at 19:33 on May 6, 2024 |

It'll be a pain in the arse to get rods out of because you'll be reaching around behind you and unable to see where the reel stem is. IMO you'd be better off leaving it has a straight slot, rods don't bounce around that much

I still kept my fingers on the line to keep it tight then used the drill to unspool the reel. I think power pro line cones with a little bit of adhesive backed foam that you stick on the reel and you tie it around the spool.

Getting the line back off the reel wasn't actually much of an issue, flipped the switch and just pulled on the line by hand, but now I still have to secure some tape here and then tie a knot that actually holds around this thing. Except, I don't have to. I'm not gonna waste any more of my time or especially yours, sorry. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)
