Its real funny that for 30 years talking about all the reasons the Iraqi T-72s were so out classed was meet with calls of, well pretty much just saying cope. And now that Western armor is getting owned they're just recycling the stuff about the T-72. Oh we shouldn't have sent Ukraine the Monkey model of the M1, how long till thwy just start parroting that we didn't send them the AT rounds meant for Russian tanks

The thing about Iraq is most engagements were with T55 variants anyway. Maybe the US should send Ukraine some m48's

Edit: Greece still uses 390 of those! Send them now!

I have seen the listed weight for a standard M1A1 as 57.2 metric tons, so in all likelihood, it is just what they went with for a plaque aimed at the public.

Nevertheless, an US Army Abrams is going to be more heavily armored depending on the version, but honestly, it probably isn't going to be enough to make a serious difference in overall production against the type of munitions being used against them (especially from the top or the sides) at the cost of eroding the power/weight ratio and reliability further.

I think the Russians have the right idea, cage armor or just a shell is going to mitigate the damage more effectively than simply adding more armor on the tanks. It isn't going to be useful in all cases but there is certainly a point where weight becomes an issue and you don't want your tank to be 68-70+ metric tons.

A lot of Ukrainian neonazis are actually Russian, both in ethnicity and nationality. Putin spent a lot of effort clearing Moscow of neonazis and a lot of them went to Ukraine to fester. I don't know if they became Banderites while there.

I recently spoke to a Russian man who lives near Irkutsk, iirc. He said it's a nice place to visit. We spoke a bit and he told me a few interesting things:

1) It wouldn't really be safe for me and my family to visit there, because we would encounter severe racism.

2) The neonazi gangs and graffiti declined severely since 2022. As far as he could tell they all joined Wagner/Russia or Ukraine and died there.

I don't know if Putin actually did anything intentionally to clear his country of Nazis, but the invasion definitely did have this effect.

It was honestly changing even before the war after the Russian government took an hard stance against Neo-Nazism including banning Swastikas and essentially anti-government Nazis joined the Ukrainians while the pro-government ones usually had to tone down their message and logos and join the fight in the Donbass or just give it up entirely.

The war just made this far more stark.

What The Foiled Zelensky Assassination Plot Really Means

quote:

Ukraine’s security services said on Tuesday that they foiled a plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Two colonels in the State Guard of Ukraine, which counts the protection of top Ukrainian officials among its duties, were identified as part of a group allegedly working with Russia’s FSB security agency to assassinate President Zelenskyy, Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) head Vasyl Malyuk, and military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov.

This marks one of the highest-profile attempts on Zelenskyy’s life since Russia commenced its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It is also the first time that high-ranking officials were part of such a plot, according to Kyiv. It is unprecedented that “such a high-ranking official of the state security department has become [the] enemy’s moles,” SBU spokesman Artem Dehtiarenko told Politico.

News of the alleged plot comes on the heels of months of internal turmoil in Kyiv, including frequent firings and arrests of top and senior officials over corruption and espionage charges, as well as Zelenskyy’s decision to fire Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces (AFU) and the second most popular public official in the country, Valery Zaluzhny.

These developments, when viewed against the backdrop of Ukraine’s dwindling battlefield prospects, point to a degree of internal Ukrainian vulnerability that should alarm Western policymakers.

The details of this particular assassination attempt are still unclear, and the full extent of Russian involvement has yet to be established. But if — as asserted by Ukraine’s own security agency — Russian operatives were able to enlist the help of at least two high-level Ukrainian officials to organize a sweeping, multi-stage plot to kill three of Ukraine’s senior-most public servants including the President, it suggests a larger phenomenon of extensive Russian intelligence penetration in the Ukrainian bureaucracy and military that will prove difficult to fully diagnose, let alone uproot.

Indeed, this problem will likely grow even more severe as the growing threat of the AFU’s collapse along the front lines creates new incentives for Ukrainian officials at all levels to consider collaborating with Russia. The May assassination plot could thus be an early warning sign of a wider internal dysfunction that, if left unchecked, may eventually snowball into a challenge to Ukraine’s political stability.

These developments are not indicative of a Ukrainian state that is winning or confident in its impending victory, but are instead symptomatic of a harried wartime government riven by internal weaknesses that are being exploited by Russia with increasing effectiveness.

This article brings up a fair point. Even taking Zelensky's claim about the supposed plot at face value does not portray a flattering picture of the current state of the Ukrainian government. If true Russia was able to flip two colonels to help them assassinate Zelensky.

Certainly, Western troops operating in Ukraine will be at some risk. But Western troops often operate under perilous circumstances, helping endangered governments or people.

I remember when my battery was overrun by a Taliban MRR supported by T-80s. This will just be more of the same. Tally-ho!

I dont know why Russia would assassinate Zelensky tbh. Zelensky seems intent on feeding every last Ukrainian willing to take up arms for their country directly into the Russian woodchipper with a mandate to defend every last foot of soil instead of strategic retreats to preserve forces for more critical defenses. Why Lithuania is considering sending soldiers to Ukraine

quote:

Lithuania is prepared to send its soldiers to Ukraine on a training mission, its prime minister told Andy Bounds.

Context: Lithuania, which declared independence from Moscow in 1990, wants to strengthen its military support for Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed sending European soldiers to Ukraine, though other countries have been wary of provoking a direct confrontation with Russia.

Ingrida Šimonytė told the FT she had parliamentary permission to send troops to Ukraine for training purposes — something her government has floated before — but that Kyiv had not yet asked for this.

Šimonytė acknowledged that Russia would consider it a provocation, but added: “If we just thought about the Russian response, then we could not send anything. Every second week you hear that somebody will be nuked.”

This week, Russia conducted drills with tactical nuclear weapons in response to Macron’s comments. Šimonytė doubted the weapons would be used, given the radioactive fallout would also hit Russia. “Most of the time the winds blow from west to east,” she noted drily.

According to Šimonytė, Russia has been intensifying attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure such as power stations, schools and hospitals. “Russia is trying to provoke a new wave of people fleeing Ukraine because there are no basic utilities and no basic services,” the Lithuanian premier said.

Šimonytė played down reports that Lithuania was helping return men of fighting age to Ukraine, which is desperately trying to recruit more soldiers. “We will not be arranging deportations, or looking for Ukrainian men in the country because this would not be legal,” Šimonytė said, adding that the EU has guaranteed them protection until March 2025.

However, those who Kyiv proves to have evaded military service might be denied permanent residence, Šimonytė said. She was “keen to help Ukraine, to ensure that it has the potential to renew its armed forces and to let people who have been fighting for a long time to rest”.
