From the last regular season game

There are 2 beer soaked shirts wrapped up by 6 layers of dry shirts, keeping the whole bundle dry and less icky to carry. I’m also wearing like 3 of the shirts too

One of the seat ushers asked how many shirts I had. I said 4. He asked how many tickets I had. I said 4. He then said good if I said any other number then he’d have to stop me

I gave one to the bouncer at CoinOp who was working during the game and he was thrilled

God, I'm so tired. What the hell did I post last night?
Things I (big time basketball layman) know about tonight's teams (mostly gleaned from Youtube videos of various types)

THE THUNDER

-Have about six billion draft picks
-Rookie star who's pretty drat good
-One of their other stars they got from the Clippers in exchange for Paul George, which even I can tell was a lol move
-There's an Australian guy
-City of Seattle unendingly praying on their downfall

THE MAVERICKS

-Luka Doncic is young, talented, and arrogant
-Part time owners of the Phoenix Suns
-Kyrie Irving actually part of team? Conduct research to confirm that Kyrie Irving can remain on team for extended length of time
-Other players may exist

THE CELTICS

-Jayson Tatum is 19, just like last year
-Numerous other players likeable as individuals; shame about the team
-Win all goddamn over the place but the competition does not appear as stiff as in the West (existence of Hornets, Wizards, Pistons, etc.)
-The Boston sports team most responsible for the "Boston highly competent sports teams leading to insufferable Boston arrogance" trend
--Therefore, gently caress 'em

THE CAVALIERS

-Donovan Mitchell is attempting to replace LeBron as the only thing Cleveland's economy is based on; success TBD
-They have other guys
--I think
-I know the least about the Cavs out of these four due to typical media focus on basically everywhere else

Patriots are newcomers to competence by comparison. I do know that the Celtics' history of success goes back way, way, way longer. Patriots arrogance has been overwhelming in my lifetime but it's ultimately down to one coach-QB combination, if a very, very long-lived one.

The Celtics, on the other hand, have had success across generations.

That's fair, I am just assuming the arrogance would come from that more recent dynasty. Celtics fans tend to be doomer brained.

ive been a celtics fan since like, 1991 and in all that time ive felt like the team had a real chance to win it in 2008, 2010, and 2022. maybe this year. it was 17 years of trash garbage interrupted by 1 ring altho admittedly the team has looked generally pretty decent (but not great) in the post big 3 era

Mm, also fair. Like I said, I'm not way in on basketball, it's never been my sport of choice, so I expected I might be off base. But that was where my thinking was coming from -- of the four Boston franchises the Celtics have the longest record of success which means the longest time to build an expectation of success, or at least competence.

This is coming from the perspective of a Minnesotan, bear in mind. Prolonged success is something we either don't get or when we have it, they move it to a bigger market.

Would be kinda funny if the player everyone said was gonna be the next MVP level dude and face of the league (Luka) is suddenly overtaken in all of that by younger and less whiney players (Ant, Shai).

Familiarity breeds contempt. We all probably said the same thing about some other older player when Luka first came on. If this were like 2002 then [white] people would be complaining that Edwards is too cocky or whatever.

Unrelated, I am extremely proud of the Orlando Magic's season. Jalen Suggs was one of the most mentally hosed up players I think I'd ever seen in his rookie year. He had good instincts, and his shot looked fine, but the results were not there, which is fine and all but he really took it hard, which snowballed. There have been many young players before him who did the same in the abstract (Kemba Walker, Malik Monk) and took awhile to get the desired result despite a competent-looking jumper, but Jalen would yell at himself mid-game, to the point that I thought he'd start crying, go on terribly cold shooting streaks for 10+ games, and just when he would have one good game he'd end up getting hurt or some other horrible luck would happen to him. It's a minor miracle that he overcame all of this from a mental standpoint. Now, he's somehow received a third place vote for defensive player of the year (I don't know about that, but it's good to see recognition) and shot 40% from 3. To put his career in perspective, he had 4.7 WS this season, and he has 4.5 career WS, which includes this season.

Suggs TS% by year
'21-22 45.5%
'22-23 52.8%
'23-24 60.2%

I tried to look up other players who had a TS% less than or equal to 45.5% while playing as much as he did as a rookie but I don't pay for bball-ref and the only results I see not blocked by an ad are guys from the 1940s and 50s so I don't think many others have overcome those struggles.

Hope you're all good. Small market dominance++

Luka has a bunch of experience as a pro prior to the NBA though. That being said, I think Luka is real fun to watch and good and it’s kind of dumb to dislike him for complaining to refs when that’s what pretty much all players do these days, especially star players.
