Guys, Seed Freedom is not only good, it's actually way better than I was expecting it to be.

It's like they had the outline for a full third season of Gundam Seed but decided to just cram it down into a movie, which sounds like it should result in a confusing or muddled mess, but actually works out really well by making the movie just extremely brisk. There's also very strong theme that is expressed both in the plot and most of the character arcs which keeps the movie focused.

I even think it would be fun for people who haven't seen Gundam Seed. The characters and their conflicts are are all very well setup, and most of the fan service moments work just as part of the giant robot spectacle.

And man, what a spectacle. The whole third act is just non-stop robot and spaceship action. They give every single surviving character from the Seed franchise a cool moment, which means it's just a series of cool moments. But they also work to finish up character arcs from the movie, so it's narratively satisfying too.

At one point a character is fighting a psychic, and he thwarts the psychic's powers by getting really horny.

Going to be watching The Dirties later today on https://goontu.be/. Matt Johnson's (Blackberry, Nirvana The Band) first flick that got rave reviews, movie is about two friends shooting a film about bullies causing a school shooting.

https://letterboxd.com/film/the-dirties/

If you haven't seen Nirvana The Band, Johnson has a fun habit of improvising most of the dialog, along with shooting scenes with regular people who are unaware they're in a movie scene. In this case, he shot this movie in an actual school, with them thinking he was actually his character. Flavor wise it's nothing like Borat, but he does a good job like Borat of never making John Q Public the brunt of the joke, the honest reactions being fun on their own.

Will be on around 8pm ET or so.

It’s the quality/attention ratio. I wouldn’t mind them if they’d come and gone, as they deserved to, but SW takes up so much loving room while being mediocre at best and often downright poo poo. Like I said, it’s studying piles of poo poo for corn, and then listening to people talking excitedly about how this pile of poo poo differs from that pile of poo poo, when in the end they are all just piles of poo poo. This is probably aggravated by it just having been May 4th, which is the most depressingly manufactured commercialised “day” ever.

I don’t hate them as much as I hate Lars vT but nobody talks about him all the loving time, and I can at least see that he has some directing skills, misdirected as they are.

I’ve had a quiet year so far but am suddenly becoming potentially VERY busy, on some cool stuff.

The only Apes stuff I've seen was the original film, part of the sequel, and then the Tim Burton reboot (goddamn was the Tim Burton film awful).

Which then brings me to wonder....

What would you all say is the most recent "great" Tim Burton film?

And I mean a film that you would recommend to people as a great film with no reservations.

It’s part of the same continuity but set like 300 years later so it doesn’t have any of the same characters. The first film of that trilogy is bad, second is pretty darn good, and third is solid and surprisingly ambitious for a monkey movie

Sweeney Todd isn't the best as a musical because the singing is really downplayed, which is something of a disappointment when you've got goddamn Sondheim to work with, but it's quite entertaining in and of itself.

I totally agree with this too. Even the new cast recordings don't compare with Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou. Josh Groban is pretty darn good as Todd though in the most recent one.

The Tim Burton movie is beautifully lit and shot and has very minimal tackiness that he became known for in the 2000s. I kinda wish it were a Henry Selick stop motion joint honestly.

I'm honestly surprised there is even any discussion there. I know Big Fish has its followers but Sleepy Hollow is a movie that is so incredibly Burton without being, like, Alice in Wonderland. I don't know if it's a subtle variation of 9/11-brain but something happened to Burton in the 00's that screwed things up royally in the way he made his movies.

Yeah, it seems like general consensus around here is that while Burton may have some momentary flashes of greatness later, his works became incredibly inferior after 1999.

Big Fish is at least fun. Danny Devito as a wolf man ringleader, a secret town in the woods, a grandpa who's part fish, etc. etc. and it's cheesy as hell, but overall has a very sweet moral.

Don't remember Sleepy Hollow, will have to watch it again someday soon.

Alice in Wonderland is downright offensive. Despise it. It's like that Owen Wilson Bob Ross flick where it's like watching someone piss on an original beloved work for two hours. Carroll's story is kooky but it's incredibly witty, and to replace that and all the character from Wonderland with the most generic fantasy "get sword, slay dragon" plot is a travesty. It also looks disgusting. Might the worst movie I've ever seen. Phooey.

I remember seeing Alice in Wonderland in 3D at the cinema and it was one of the worst experiences I've ever had. Not only was the film bad, it was just incredibly dark. Not tonally dark, but just lighting dark. 3D naturally makes things darker and the film already had a multitude of low-lit scenes to begin with. There were multiple parts of the film where I literally could not tell what was happening on screen.
